The long-standing uncertainty surrounding the India–Pakistan clash at the T20 World Cup 2026 finally came to an end after the Pakistan government reversed its earlier decision and confirmed that the national team will take the field against India on February 15 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Reacting to the development on Tuesday, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla thanked the International Cricket Council (ICC) for its leadership in resolving the standoff and ensuring that cricket remained the priority.
The breakthrough came late Monday night when Pakistan announced a U-turn, agreeing to participate in the marquee fixture. The decision followed the ICC’s confirmation that no sanctions would be imposed on the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for not travelling to India for the 20-team tournament and that Bangladesh would be granted hosting rights for one ICC event before 2031.
ICC Talks in Lahore Pave the Way
On Sunday, a two-member ICC delegation held crucial talks in Lahore, meeting PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul at the Gaddafi Stadium. During the meeting, several demands were placed before the ICC, primarily linked to participation, hosting rights, and assurances for member boards.
Once the ICC formally confirmed relief measures for Bangladesh, the Pakistan government gave its official approval for the team to participate in the India match, clearing the final hurdle.
Rajeev Shukla Praises ICC’s Role
Addressing reporters on Tuesday morning, Rajeev Shukla expressed satisfaction over the outcome and credited the ICC for brokering an amicable solution.
“I am delighted to see the outcome of the deliberations initiated by the ICC representatives, supervised by the ICC Chairman, who went to Lahore to talk to the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Bangladesh Cricket Board. A good and amicable solution has been found that priorities the importance of cricket,” Shukla said.
He added that the ICC deserved full credit for resolving the issue and bringing Pakistan back to the table.
“All kudos to the ICC for taking this initiative, resolving the issue, and bringing cricket back to the forefront. This is a major achievement for the ICC, and I would like to thank them for ensuring that Pakistan will play the match in Colombo,” he added.
‘World Cup Will Be a Success Story’
With the India–Pakistan fixture now confirmed, Shukla said the T20 World Cup 2026 is set to become a success story. Although the tournament began on February 7 with the opening match between Pakistan and the Netherlands, much of the early spotlight had been overshadowed by the uncertainty around the marquee clash.
“It’s good news for all of us. The scheduled match on February 15 in Colombo will take place, and Pakistan will play. Now this World Cup will be a big success story,” Shukla said.
He also noted that Bangladesh’s concerns had been addressed during negotiations and that the BCB had expressed satisfaction with the ICC’s handling of the situation.
“Bangladesh’s feelings have been assaged, some relief has been given to their board, and they are happy. They have also praised the ICC. It’s a win-win situation for everyone,” he added.
Background to the Boycott
Pakistan had initially boycotted the India match in solidarity with Bangladesh, after the BCB was replaced by Scotland in Group C of the T20 World Cup. Bangladesh had earlier requested that its matches be shifted to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns.
However, sources indicate that tensions escalated after Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman was withdrawn from the IPL, reflecting strained bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh, which ultimately spilled over into World Cup participation issues.
With diplomatic and cricketing hurdles now cleared, the focus returns to the field, as fans worldwide eagerly await one of the most anticipated matches in world cricket.
