In a historic development, Ahmedabad has been recommended as the proposed host city for the Centenary Commonwealth Games 2030, marking a monumental moment for Indian sports. The Commonwealth Sport Executive Board announced its recommendation following a detailed evaluation process, positioning India to potentially host one of the most significant global sporting events of the decade.
Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya hailed the decision as a “proud milestone” for the nation.
“A huge moment for Indian sports! Grateful to Commonwealth Sport’s Executive Board for recommending Ahmedabad as the proposed host city for the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030,” Mandaviya said on X.
“This decision reflects India’s growing dominance in global sport, made possible by the visionary leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji,” he added.
Government Leaders Celebrate the Achievement
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated citizens on the announcement, calling it an endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to make India a global sporting powerhouse.
“A day of immense joy and pride for India. It is a grand endorsement of PM Modi Ji’s relentless efforts to place India on the world sports map,” Shah said.
“By raising world-class infrastructure and nurturing sports talent nationwide, Modi Ji has made India a marvel of a sports destination,” he added.
The Road to the 2030 Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Sport Executive Board’s recommendation will now be presented to the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26, 2025, where a final decision will be made.
The selection follows a rigorous evaluation of candidate cities, including Ahmedabad (India) and Abuja (Nigeria). The assessment covered multiple factors such as infrastructure, governance, athlete experience, and alignment with Commonwealth values.
Framed under the ‘Games Reset’ principles, designed to promote innovation and inclusivity, Ahmedabad’s proposal impressed the Evaluation Committee with its world-class infrastructure, technical readiness, and commitment to sustainability.
India’s Sporting Legacy and Global Vision
If confirmed, Ahmedabad will host the Centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games, exactly 100 years after the inaugural event in Hamilton, Canada (1930).
India, the most populous country in the Commonwealth, has a strong sporting record, finishing fourth at the Birmingham 2022 Games. The bid highlights India’s commitment to global sporting values and its capability to deliver a Games that celebrates the diversity and scale of modern sport.
The Board also acknowledged Nigeria’s compelling proposal and expressed intent to support its future hosting ambitions, possibly for 2034, aligning with the goal of bringing the Games to Africa.
A Global Opportunity for Indian Sports
The 2030 Commonwealth Games could mark a transformative moment for India’s sports ecosystem — boosting infrastructure, employment, and tourism while enhancing the nation’s international sporting reputation.
If approved, the Ahmedabad Games would follow Glasgow 2026, promising to deliver a grand celebration of athletic excellence and unity under the Commonwealth banner.
