Sambalpur: The water level in the Hirakud reservoir continued to rise on Monday as authorities kept 28 sluice gates open to release the increasing volume of water. The development has also affected road connectivity between Sambalpur and Sonepur, with water flowing over several portions of the route.
According to the latest figures available on Monday morning, the water level at Hirakud Dam stood at 629.08 feet. The reservoir was receiving a substantial inflow, prompting authorities to maintain a high level of discharge through the open gates.
Over 6 Lakh Cusecs Entering Reservoir
The latest data showed that around 6,17,308 cusecs of water was entering the Hirakud reservoir every second.
In comparison, an average of approximately 4,96,602 cusecs of water was being released from the dam through the 28 open sluice gates.
The continuing inflow and outflow are being closely monitored by dam authorities as they manage the reservoir level and downstream water discharge.
Water Flows Over Sambalpur-Sonepur Road
The increased release of water from Hirakud has also affected vehicular movement between Sambalpur and Sonepur.
Water has reportedly overflowed onto the road at several locations along the route. In some stretches, around 2 to 3 feet of water is flowing over the roadway, making it difficult for vehicles to pass.
The situation has disrupted normal traffic movement, with commuters facing difficulties while attempting to cross the affected stretches.
Authorities Keep Close Watch on Water Levels
With a large volume of water continuing to enter the reservoir every second, officials are closely monitoring the inflow, reservoir level and outflow.
The opening of 28 sluice gates has resulted in a substantial discharge downstream, with the impact becoming particularly visible along low-lying portions of the Sambalpur-Sonepur road.
Authorities are keeping track of changing water levels and the downstream situation as the reservoir continues to receive significant inflows.
Road Connectivity Remains a Concern
The presence of water over the road has emerged as a major concern for commuters travelling between Sambalpur and Sonepur.
As water levels and discharge can change depending on rainfall and upstream inflow, motorists and other road users need to exercise caution while travelling through affected stretches.
The situation is being monitored as officials continue to regulate the release of water from Hirakud Dam.
