The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has reported a natural gas discovery in the Mahanadi deep-sea basin, around 43 kilometres off the Konark coast of Odisha.
The discovery was made during ONGC’s ongoing deep-water exploration programme, ‘Samudra Manthan’, highlighting the potential of the offshore Mahanadi basin for further energy exploration.
The development has brought renewed attention to Odisha’s offshore region and its potential contribution to India’s domestic energy resources.
ONGC Drills Deep-Sea Well
As part of the exploration campaign, ONGC drilled a well to a depth of approximately 1,623 metres using the Platinum Explorer drillship.
Drilling operations reportedly commenced on July 25 as part of the corporation’s continuing exploration programme in the Mahanadi basin.
The operation was aimed at assessing the hydrocarbon potential of the deep-sea region off the Odisha coast.
Encouraging Gas Flow Reported
ONGC has reported encouraging initial results from the well.
According to the company, testing has indicated gas flow along with promising reservoir pressure. Gas flow was reportedly observed during testing over a period of three days.
The initial findings have generated interest in the potential of the offshore discovery. However, the available results are not sufficient to establish the total size of the reserve or determine whether it can be commercially developed.
Further drilling, testing and geological assessment will be necessary before the full potential of the discovery can be established.
Further Assessment Needed
The discovery is being viewed as an important development for exploration activity in Odisha’s offshore waters.
Geologist Manas Swain said the discovery could have economic implications for the state if the gas resource is eventually found to be commercially viable.
He also pointed to the wider exploration potential of the Bay of Bengal, noting that additional surveys and assessments could help identify other hydrocarbon-bearing formations.
According to Swain, the extent of the reserve and its commercial prospects will depend on further exploration and evaluation.
Potential For Odisha’s Energy Sector
If subsequent assessments establish that the gas reserve is commercially viable, the discovery could potentially contribute to Odisha’s energy resources and associated economic activity.
The offshore location, around 43 kilometres from the Konark coast, also places the discovery within a strategically significant area of the Mahanadi basin.
However, commercial development cannot be confirmed on the basis of the initial gas flow alone. The quality, volume, pressure characteristics and continuity of the gas-bearing reservoir will need to be assessed through additional testing.
Samudra Manthan Exploration Campaign
The discovery forms part of ONGC’s broader ‘Samudra Manthan’ deep-sea exploration campaign, through which the company is conducting exploration activities in India’s offshore basins.
The Mahanadi basin has been an important area of interest for offshore exploration, and the latest finding could encourage further assessment of its hydrocarbon potential.
For now, the discovery remains at the exploration and evaluation stage, with additional studies expected to determine the scale and commercial significance of the gas-bearing formation.
