India has been chosen to host the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy, marking a significant milestone in the growth of women’s cricket. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed on Wednesday, September 2, that India will stage the six-team 2027 Women’s Champions Trophy.
The tournament is scheduled to be played from February 14 to 28, 2027, with matches taking place in Mumbai and Vadodara. The Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium have been selected as the two venues.
Six Teams To Compete In Historic Tournament
The competition will feature Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka.
The six teams secured their places based on their positions in the ICC Women’s T20 rankings, setting up a high-profile tournament featuring some of the strongest sides in international women’s cricket.
The competition will follow a league format in the opening stage. Each team will face every other participating team, with the top two sides advancing to the final.
The championship match is scheduled to take place on February 28 in Mumbai.
India Wins Hosting Rights
The inaugural edition was originally planned to be hosted by Sri Lanka. However, questions were raised over the country’s ability to stage the tournament after required renovation work at the proposed facilities was not completed within the stipulated timeframe.
The ICC subsequently considered Bangladesh, India and South Africa as alternative hosts.
Following an assessment of the prescribed hosting requirements, India emerged as the preferred choice. The decision was formally approved by the ICC Board on September 2.
Hosting the first Women’s Champions Trophy is expected to further strengthen India’s position as a major destination for international women’s cricket.
Jay Shah Welcomes New Chapter
ICC Chairman Jay Shah said the tournament would open a new chapter in women’s cricket.
With six of the world’s leading teams competing, the tournament is expected to provide high-quality cricket while also creating an intense battle for supremacy among the participating sides.
The event will also give fans in India an opportunity to watch leading women’s cricket teams compete in a new ICC tournament format.

The ICC has said that the complete match schedule and detailed ticketing information will be announced at a later date.
