Koraput: Panic gripped Laxmipur in Odisha’s Koraput district on Tuesday evening after residents reported experiencing mild tremors accompanied by a loud sound. The brief seismic activity reportedly occurred at around 8:39 pm, prompting several people to step outside their homes as a precaution.
Residents in the area said they felt sudden jolts lasting for a few seconds. The tremors also reportedly caused concern among shopkeepers at the Laxmipur bus stand, with several people coming out of their establishments after feeling the movement.
Loud Sound Accompanies Tremors
According to local accounts, the tremors were accompanied by a loud sound that startled residents.
Many people immediately contacted relatives, friends and acquaintances to find out whether the tremors had been felt in neighbouring areas. Local residents also claimed that similar tremors were experienced around the same time in parts of Narayanpatna in Koraput district.
Manoj Kumar Behera, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Laxmipur, said he experienced the jolt while watching television at home.
He reportedly described hearing a sound resembling a blast before feeling the ground shake for around five to seven seconds.
Similar Tremors Reported Earlier
Residents claimed that Laxmipur had experienced mild tremors a few months ago as well, adding to concerns following Tuesday night’s incident.
However, there was no immediate confirmation regarding whether the latest event was caused by an earthquake or another form of seismic activity.
No Casualties Or Property Damage Reported
There were no immediate reports of casualties, injuries or damage to houses and other properties following the reported tremors.
Authorities and residents are awaiting official information regarding the incident.
