Veteran actor Pradeep Rawat, celebrated for portraying some of Indian cinema’s most memorable villains, passed away on Tuesday evening at the age of 74 after a prolonged battle with blood cancer. The actor breathed his last at a hospital in Bhiwandi, where he had been undergoing treatment following a recent relapse of the disease.
Rawat, whose career spanned more than four decades across Hindi, Telugu and Tamil cinema, was widely admired for his commanding screen presence and powerful performances in films such as Ghajini, Lagaan and Sarfarosh, as well as his memorable role in the iconic television series Mahabharat.
Long Battle with Blood Cancer
The news of Rawat’s demise was confirmed by his manager, Siddharth Tiwari, who said the actor had been fighting blood cancer for the past five years.
According to Tiwari, Rawat had successfully recovered from the illness around four years ago. However, the cancer relapsed nearly six weeks ago, leading to his hospitalisation. During treatment, his platelet count reportedly dropped sharply, and despite medical efforts, he could not recover.
He passed away on August 4 between 6:00 pm and 6:30 pm, leaving behind his wife Kalyani Rawat and son Vikramaditya Rawat.
Last Rites to Be Held on Wednesday
Actor Yashpal Sharma, who shared screen space with Rawat in Lagaan, confirmed the veteran actor’s demise through an emotional social media post.
He informed fans and colleagues that Rawat’s antim darshan and last rites would be held on Wednesday, August 5, allowing friends, family and members of the film fraternity to pay their final respects.
Film Industry Pays Tribute
Soon after the news broke, tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry.
Yashpal Sharma remembered his co-star by writing, “Pradeep Rawat, our Ghajini, Deva of Lagaan, RIP,” recalling some of the actor’s most iconic performances.
The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) also expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing Rawat as an actor whose powerful portrayals of villainous characters left an enduring mark on Indian cinema.
In its tribute, the association said his remarkable contribution to the film industry and his unforgettable performances would continue to inspire generations of movie lovers.
A Distinguished Career Across Film and Television
Born on January 21, 1952, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Pradeep Rawat built an illustrious acting career spanning more than forty years.
Television audiences first recognised him for his portrayal of Ashwatthama in B.R. Chopra’s legendary mythological television series Mahabharat (1988), a performance that remains one of the most memorable depictions of the character.
He later established himself as one of Bollywood’s most dependable character actors and antagonists.
Among his most notable performances were:
- Sultan in Sarfarosh (1999).
- Deva Singh Sodhi, the fiery fast bowler, in the Oscar-nominated Lagaan (2001).
- Ghajini Dharmatma, the ruthless antagonist in the Tamil film Ghajini (2005), a role he reprised in the Hindi remake (2008) starring Aamir Khan.
In addition to Hindi cinema, Rawat appeared in numerous Telugu, Tamil and other regional films, earning widespread appreciation for his versatility and commanding performances.
