Berhampur: President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Ganjam district marked a historic and memorable occasion on Tuesday as she arrived in Berhampur aboard the specially designated ‘President Special’ train, becoming the first President of India to reach the city through this exclusive rail service. The landmark visit witnessed elaborate security arrangements, a ceremonial reception, vibrant cultural performances, and enthusiastic public participation, reflecting the significance of the President’s visit to southern Odisha.
The Indian Railways had made comprehensive arrangements at Berhampur Railway Station to ensure the smooth arrival of the President’s special train, with enhanced security, protocol measures, and ceremonial preparations in place well before her arrival.
President Special Train Arrives at Berhampur
The President’s special train departed from Bhubaneswar Railway Station at around 9:00 AM and reached Platform No. 4 of Berhampur Railway Station at approximately 11:10 AM, completing the journey in nearly two hours and ten minutes.
The arrival of the train marked a significant moment for Berhampur, as local residents, railway officials, and dignitaries gathered to witness the historic occasion. The station was decorated for the visit, while security personnel ensured seamless movement in and around the premises.
Governor, Chief Minister and Dignitaries Extend Warm Welcome
President Murmu was received by Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, senior ministers, Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, district officials, and senior administrative officers.
The ceremonial welcome showcased Odisha’s rich traditions and hospitality. Several cultural troupes performed traditional folk art forms to greet the President, creating a festive atmosphere at the railway station.
Traditional Cultural Performances Showcase Ganjam’s Heritage
The welcome ceremony featured a colourful display of Ganjam’s vibrant cultural heritage.
Artists presented Bagha Nritya (Tiger Dance), devotional Sankirtan, and several traditional folk performances accompanied by the auspicious sound of conch shells. The performances highlighted the district’s rich artistic traditions and offered the President a glimpse into Odisha’s diverse cultural identity.
President Murmu interacted with the performers, appreciated their efforts, and posed for photographs with the artists, acknowledging their contribution to preserving the state’s cultural heritage.
President Visits Taptapani to Offer Prayers
Following the reception at Berhampur, President Murmu proceeded by road to Taptapani, located nearly 60 kilometres away, where she offered prayers at the revered Maa Kandhuni Temple.
The visit to the temple formed an important part of her two-day tour of Ganjam district. Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi accompanied the President during the road journey.
Warm Public Reception Along the Route
Thousands of residents gathered along both sides of the roads leading from Berhampur to Taptapani to welcome the President.
As her convoy passed through various locations, President Murmu greeted the people by waving from her vehicle, drawing enthusiastic responses from citizens, school students, and local residents who had assembled to catch a glimpse of the country’s First Citizen.
The atmosphere remained festive throughout the route, with people cheering and expressing their excitement at witnessing the Presidential convoy.
Heartwarming Gesture Wins Hearts
One of the most memorable moments of the visit came near Meenakshi Nagar in Berhampur.
Known for her affection towards children, President Murmu briefly stopped her convoy, stepped out of her vehicle, and personally distributed chocolates to young children waiting along the roadside.
The unexpected gesture delighted the children and their families, creating an emotional and joyful atmosphere. Many parents described the moment as unforgettable, while children were thrilled to interact with the President from such close quarters.
The heartwarming interaction quickly became one of the highlights of the visit, reflecting President Murmu’s simplicity and her warm connection with people, especially children.
