The Ministry of Railways on Wednesday launched the beta version of the redesigned IRCTC website, introducing a modern interface and a significantly improved ticket booking experience for millions of railway passengers across the country. The upgraded portal aims to make online train ticket reservations faster, simpler, and more user-friendly while reducing unnecessary steps during the booking process.
The beta version became available from 9 pm through the existing IRCTC website, allowing users to explore the new features before the platform’s official nationwide rollout. Railway officials have invited passengers to use the revamped portal and provide feedback, which will help fine-tune the system before the final version is launched.
The upgraded website marks one of the most significant changes to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) platform since its inception. First introduced in 2002, the IRCTC portal has evolved into India’s primary online railway ticket booking system and currently handles an average of around 14.5 lakh train ticket bookings every day.
Redesigned Interface Focuses on Simplicity
According to the Ministry of Railways, the new website has been developed with a strong emphasis on improving user experience by reducing clutter and making navigation more intuitive. The redesign was inspired by suggestions received from students of the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, who interacted with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and shared ideas on enhancing the portal’s design and functionality.
Officials said the ministry carefully evaluated these recommendations before incorporating several of them into the revamped platform, resulting in a cleaner interface that is easier to use for both new and regular passengers.
Major Improvements in the New IRCTC Website
The beta version introduces several features designed to simplify the ticket booking process and reduce the time required to complete reservations.
One of the biggest changes is the removal of unnecessary captchas, intrusive pop-ups, flashing banners, and distracting graphics, which had often slowed down the booking process and affected user experience, especially during peak booking hours.
The redesigned website also allows passengers to view seat availability across all travel classes on a single screen, eliminating the need to switch repeatedly between different coach categories while searching for tickets.
Another major enhancement is a faster checkout process with fewer booking steps. The simplified workflow enables users to complete reservations more efficiently, reducing delays during high-demand booking periods such as Tatkal ticket reservations.
For frequent travellers, the new portal introduces the convenience of saved passenger profiles, allowing users to store traveller details securely. This feature eliminates the need to repeatedly enter passenger information for every booking, making future reservations quicker and more seamless.
Integration with New Passenger Reservation Engine
The Ministry of Railways also announced that the redesigned IRCTC website will soon be integrated with the upgraded Passenger Reservation Engine (PRE), which is currently undergoing extensive modernisation.
The Passenger Reservation Engine serves as the backbone of India’s railway reservation ecosystem and supports multiple train booking platforms. Despite the ongoing upgrade, the reservation engine has continued to manage regular ticket bookings without disruption.
Officials said the upgraded reservation engine will offer improved performance, higher processing capacity, and enhanced system reliability, enabling faster ticket booking and smoother operations during periods of heavy demand.
The fully integrated version of the new IRCTC portal is expected to become available in the coming weeks once the upgraded Passenger Reservation Engine is ready for deployment.
Beta Phase to Collect User Feedback
The Railways clarified that the current release is a beta version, meaning the platform is still undergoing testing before its official launch. During this phase, passengers are encouraged to explore the new website, identify any issues, and submit suggestions to help improve the final product.
The ministry stated that user feedback will play a crucial role in refining the platform’s design, functionality, and performance before the nationwide rollout.
A Step Towards Digital Modernisation
The launch of the revamped IRCTC website is part of Indian Railways’ broader digital transformation initiative aimed at improving passenger services through technology-driven solutions. Over the past few years, Indian Railways has introduced several digital upgrades, including enhanced mobile ticketing, AI-enabled customer support, online food ordering, real-time train tracking, and improvements to reservation systems.
With millions of passengers relying on the IRCTC platform every day, the redesigned website is expected to deliver a smoother, faster, and more efficient booking experience while supporting the increasing demand for online railway ticket reservations across the country.
