Bhubaneswar: Continuous rainfall continues to lash several parts of Odisha under the influence of an active low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the weather system will remain active over the next 24 hours, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to many districts across the state.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued Orange and Yellow warnings for multiple districts, cautioning residents about heavy rain, thunderstorms, waterlogging, and possible disruption to normal life. Authorities have advised people in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow weather advisories.
Orange Alert for Seven Districts
For Friday, the IMD has issued an Orange Warning for seven districts where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places.
The districts under the Orange Alert are:
- Sonepur
- Nuapada
- Bolangir
- Sundargarh
- Jharsuguda
- Bargarh
- Sambalpur
These districts may experience intense rainfall, which could lead to localised flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas, disruption of road transport, and reduced visibility. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and remain cautious near rivers and streams.
Yellow Warning for 18 Districts
Apart from the Orange Alert, the weather office has issued a Yellow Warning for several other districts, forecasting light to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
The districts under the Yellow Warning include:
- Balasore
- Bhadrak
- Jajpur
- Kendrapara
- Jagatsinghpur
- Cuttack
- Deogarh
- Angul
- Dhenkanal
- Keonjhar
- Mayurbhanj
- Boudh
- Kalahandi
- Kandhamal
- Rayagada
- Puri
- Khordha
- Nayagarh
Weather officials said intermittent rain and thunderstorm activity are likely to continue throughout the day in these districts. While five districts have not been placed under any weather warning, isolated rainfall cannot be ruled out.
Rainfall Likely to Continue Till Tomorrow
According to meteorologists, the active low-pressure system will continue to influence Odisha’s weather until tomorrow. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at several places, particularly in western and northern parts of the state.
The IMD stated that the intensity of the weather system is likely to gradually shift over the coming days. For Saturday, a Yellow Warning has been issued for 12 districts in western Odisha, where light to moderate rainfall is expected.
Although rainfall intensity may reduce in some coastal regions, showers are likely to persist across several interior districts.
Fishermen Advised Not to Venture into Sea
The prevailing weather conditions have also led to rough sea conditions along the Odisha coast. In view of strong winds and turbulent seas, the authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until weather conditions improve.
The advisory has been issued to prevent any untoward incidents as the low-pressure system continues to affect coastal waters.
Authorities Urge Public to Stay Cautious
The district administrations and disaster management authorities are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation. People have been advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins, avoid waterlogged areas, and take necessary precautions during thunderstorms.
Residents have also been urged to avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning, stay away from swollen rivers and streams, and report any weather-related emergencies to local authorities.
The IMD said it will continue to monitor the low-pressure system and issue further forecasts and warnings as required.
