Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena Resigns, Cites Personal Reasons

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jagmohan Meena has resigned from the Indian Police Service (IPS), citing personal reasons for stepping down. The development came to light on Monday, with the 2013-batch IPS officer confirming that he intends to transition to the private sector after his resignation is formally accepted by the Odisha government.

Meena clarified that his decision was entirely personal and denied any external pressure behind his resignation. The state government is yet to formally accept his resignation, and no announcement has been made regarding his successor.

Resignation Submitted Nearly a Month Ago

Speaking to the media, Jagmohan Meena revealed that he had submitted his resignation nearly a month ago. However, the proposal is still under administrative consideration.

While declining to comment on speculation surrounding his exit, Meena reiterated that he chose to leave the police service for personal reasons and is planning to pursue opportunities in the private sector.

“There is no other reason. I have resigned due to personal reasons. There was no pressure on me, and I had the opportunity to serve the people. The people of Odisha are very good, and I hope that Lord Jagannath’s blessings remain with me,” Meena said.

Distinguished Career in Odisha Police

An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jagmohan Meena has held several key positions during his tenure in the Odisha Police.

He assumed charge as the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhubaneswar, in February 2025, where he earned recognition for expediting investigations, ensuring timely disposal of major cases, and strengthening law enforcement in the state capital.

Before his Bhubaneswar posting, Meena served as:

  • DCP, Cuttack
  • Superintendent of Police (SP), Angul
  • Superintendent of Police (SP), Ganjam

His service record includes several prestigious honours, including:

  • Police Medal for Gallantry (2019)
  • Police Antrik Suraksha Seva Padak (2021)
  • Governor’s Medal (2023)

Speculation Surrounds Exit

Meena’s resignation comes at a time when the Odisha Police has been under increased public and political scrutiny over law and order issues, including incidents of violent crime and mob attacks.

Political circles have linked his resignation to recent criticism directed at the Bhubaneswar Police following the death of Government Railway Police (GRP) constable Soumya Ranjan in Balianta, with speculation suggesting possible administrative pressure.

However, Meena firmly dismissed such claims, maintaining that his resignation was solely a personal decision and not influenced by any external factors.

Awaiting Government Approval

The Odisha government is yet to formally accept Jagmohan Meena’s resignation. An official announcement regarding his replacement as Bhubaneswar DCP is expected after the administrative process is completed.

His departure marks the exit of one of Odisha’s prominent IPS officers, whose tenure was noted for handling several high-profile investigations and maintaining a strong policing record across multiple districts.
