Machkund D-Dam Opens First Sluice Gate of the Season as Heavy Rain Pushes Reservoir Near Full Capacity in Odisha’s Koraput

Koraput: Continuous heavy rainfall in Odisha’s Koraput district has prompted authorities to open the first sluice gate of the Machkund D-Dam for the first time this monsoon season, as the reservoir’s water level climbed close to its maximum storage capacity.

The decision was taken after persistent rainfall in the Lamtaput region significantly increased inflows into the reservoir, raising concerns over water storage levels. As part of precautionary measures, water is now being released into the Chitrakonda Reservoir in neighbouring Malkangiri district to regulate the rising water level and ensure the structural safety of the dam.

Reservoir Water Level Approaches Maximum Capacity

According to officials, the Machkund D-Dam has a maximum storage capacity of 2,590 feet, while the water level has already reached 2,587 feet, leaving only a narrow margin before the reservoir reaches its full capacity.

With heavy rainfall continuing in the upper catchment areas, authorities decided to open one sluice gate to gradually release excess water and prevent any undue pressure on the dam.

Officials said the move is a routine precautionary step aimed at maintaining safe operating levels during the monsoon.

Around 1,000 Cusecs of Water Being Released

Following the opening of the gate, approximately 1,000 cusecs of water per second is being discharged into the Chitrakonda Reservoir.

The inflow into the dam has risen sharply over the past several days due to incessant rainfall across the hilly catchment areas of Lamtaput, with water levels continuing to rise steadily.

Engineers and water resource officials are monitoring both inflow and outflow to ensure that the reservoir remains within safe limits.

Administration Issues Advisory for Downstream Areas

As water is being released downstream, the district administration has issued an advisory urging residents living in low-lying areas to remain alert.

People have been advised to stay away from riverbanks, canals, and other water channels that may witness a sudden rise in water levels due to the controlled discharge from the dam.

Authorities have also requested residents not to venture into flooded stretches and to strictly follow official advisories until the situation stabilises.

Officials Monitoring Situation Round the Clock

With the first gate now operational, officials are maintaining continuous surveillance of the reservoir and rainfall conditions.

Further decisions regarding the opening of additional sluice gates will be taken based on the intensity of rainfall, inflow into the reservoir, and overall water levels in the coming days.

The administration has clarified that there is no immediate cause for panic, stressing that the release of water is a preventive measure undertaken to ensure both the safety of the dam and the protection of downstream communities.

As Odisha continues to receive widespread monsoon rainfall, water resource authorities remain on high alert, closely monitoring reservoirs and river systems across the state to minimise flood risks and ensure public safety.
