In a major step towards promoting sustainable transportation, the Government of Odisha has fixed rental charges for electric vehicles (EVs) to be hired for official use by government departments and administrative offices across the state.
The decision is aimed at accelerating EV adoption in government operations, reducing dependence on conventional fuels, and supporting Odisha’s clean mobility goals.
Revised Monthly EV Rental Rates
The government has prescribed different rental ceilings based on the rank and designation of officials.
| Category | Monthly EV Rental Limit |
|---|---|
| Block and Tehsil-level offices | ₹55,000 |
| Special Secretaries, Directors & select district offices | ₹50,000 |
| District Collectors, District Judges & SPs | ₹60,000 |
| Principal Secretaries, Commissioners & Secretaries | ₹65,000 |
| Chief Secretary & Development Commissioner | ₹70,000 |
| Governor, Chief Minister, High Court Judges & Ministers | ₹80,000 |
Charging Costs to Be Reimbursed Separately
The state government has clarified that EV charging expenses will not be included in the monthly rental amount.
Instead, departments will receive reimbursement for charging costs at the rate of ₹2 per kilometre travelled, ensuring operational expenses are covered separately from vehicle rental charges.
Mandatory EV Procurement from June 1
The move follows the Odisha government’s recent decision to make the procurement of electric vehicles mandatory for official use across government departments and institutions from June 1.
The policy is expected to:
- Reduce fuel expenditure
- Lower carbon emissions
- Promote clean energy adoption
- Encourage wider EV deployment
- Support Odisha’s environmental sustainability goals
Boost for Odisha’s Green Mobility Mission
Officials believe the initiative will significantly increase the use of electric vehicles in government administration while contributing to the state’s broader climate and sustainability objectives.
By adopting EVs for official transportation, Odisha joins a growing number of states promoting environmentally friendly mobility solutions and reducing the carbon footprint of government operations.
