Odisha to Launch EV Boats at Chilika, Hirakud and Bhitarkanika, Cruise Tourism in Koraput

Odisha is set to witness a major transformation in its tourism sector with the introduction of environment-friendly electric boats at key tourist destinations and the launch of cruise tourism in Koraput. The initiative aims to promote sustainable travel, reduce pollution, and enhance visitor experiences while preserving the state’s rich natural heritage.

The Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) has initiated the process of replacing conventional diesel-powered boats with electric alternatives at select tourism hotspots. The move is part of the state’s broader strategy to develop eco-friendly tourism infrastructure and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Electric Boats to Debut at Major Tourist Destinations

In the first phase of the project, electric boats will be introduced at some of Odisha’s most popular water-based tourism destinations, including Chilika Lake, Hirakud Reservoir, Bhitarkanika National Park, and Kolab Reservoir in Koraput.

OTDC has already floated tenders for the procurement and deployment of the boats.

Under the proposed plan:

  • Kolab Reservoir will receive a 30-seater luxury electric boat.
  • Hirakud Reservoir will get a 20-seater luxury electric boat and a 10-seater open electric boat.
  • Bhitarkanika will receive a 20-seater luxury electric boat.
  • Barkul in Chilika Lake will be equipped with an eight-seater electric boat.

Officials said some of the vessels may operate using a hybrid solar-electric system, further strengthening Odisha’s commitment to sustainable tourism and clean energy adoption.

Positive Response from Environmental Stakeholders

The proposal has largely been welcomed by environmentalists and local residents, particularly in ecologically sensitive regions such as Bhitarkanika and Chilika.

Many believe electric boats will significantly reduce water and air pollution while helping preserve fragile ecosystems and biodiversity.

Residents around Chilika have highlighted the long-term benefits of reducing fuel consumption and lowering operational costs amid rising fuel prices.

Tourists have also supported the move, saying that greater adoption of solar-powered and electric transportation will contribute to environmental conservation while offering a cleaner travel experience.

Concerns Among Traditional Boat Operators

While the initiative has been widely appreciated, some traditional boat operators have expressed concerns regarding its potential impact on their livelihoods.

Officials, however, have indicated that the transition will be implemented gradually and in accordance with government guidelines.

The Forest Department, which oversees operations in Bhitarkanika, said it will adopt the new system once official directives are issued. Currently, both government-operated and licensed private boats operate in the mangrove ecosystem.

Odisha Plans First-Ever Cruise Tourism Project

In another major tourism initiative, the Odisha government is preparing to launch cruise tourism at the scenic Kolab Reservoir in Koraput district.

The proposed cruise service will operate from Pandi Ghat and is expected to offer visitors a unique recreational experience amid the picturesque landscapes of southern Odisha.

The project will also include:

  • Water sports facilities
  • Adventure tourism activities
  • Improved visitor infrastructure
  • Recreational waterfront development

Development works worth approximately ₹10 crore are currently underway to transform the area into a major tourism destination.

Koraput Set to Emerge as a Tourism Hub

Tourism officials believe the cruise tourism project will open new opportunities for Koraput and significantly boost visitor numbers in the region.

The initiative is expected to create employment opportunities, encourage local entrepreneurship, and strengthen the hospitality and tourism ecosystem across southern Odisha.

Local residents have welcomed the proposal, expressing hope that the addition of cruise services, adventure activities, and modern tourism facilities will attract a larger number of domestic and international visitors.

Expansion to Nearly 100 Locations Planned

Officials said the electric boats will be equipped with modern safety systems and passenger-friendly amenities.

The Tourism Department is also preparing a long-term expansion plan under which electric boat services may be introduced at nearly 100 tourism and water-based destinations across Odisha in the coming years.

By integrating green mobility solutions with innovative tourism experiences such as cruise travel and adventure sports, Odisha aims to position itself as one of India’s leading sustainable tourism destinations.

The initiative reflects the state’s vision of balancing economic growth with environmental conservation while creating world-class tourism experiences for future generations.
