NCERT Rolls Out New Textbooks Under NEP 2020; Grade 9 Books to Arrive by 2026–27

In line with the reforms introduced under National Education Policy 2020, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has initiated a comprehensive overhaul of school textbooks across classes and subjects. The move follows recommendations outlined in the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023 (NCF-SE 2023), aimed at modernising India’s education system.

New Textbooks for Classes 1–8 Already Available

According to an official advisory issued on Tuesday, NCERT has successfully developed and released new textbooks for Classes 1 to 8. These books are available in both print and digital formats, ensuring wider accessibility for students and educators across the country.

The updated content is designed to promote concept-based learning, critical thinking, and competency-driven education, in alignment with NEP 2020 goals.

Grade 9 Textbooks Under Development

NCERT confirmed that new textbooks for Class 9 are currently under development and will be introduced from the academic session 2026–27.

To facilitate a smooth transition, draft syllabi for Class 9—based on NCF-SE 2023—have already been uploaded on NCERT’s official website. Teachers, educators, and stakeholders have been invited to review and provide feedback on the proposed curriculum.

Advisory for Teachers

NCERT has advised teachers to focus on bridging learning gaps before implementing the new curriculum. Schools have been urged to ensure that students possess the necessary foundational understanding to adapt effectively to the revised syllabus and textbooks.

Timeline for Senior Classes

The rollout for higher classes will follow a phased approach:

  • Classes 10 and 11: New textbooks to be introduced from the academic session 2027–28

  • Academic session 2026–27: Existing textbooks will continue for Classes 10 and 11

This gradual implementation strategy aims to provide adequate preparation time for both teachers and students.

Towards a Modern Education System

The textbook revision is a key step in transforming India’s education landscape, focusing on flexibility, multidisciplinary learning, and reduced rote memorisation. The integration of updated content and teaching methodologies is expected to better equip students for future academic and career challenges.
