The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across several districts of Odisha over the next five days, issuing multiple weather alerts for different regions of the state.
According to the latest weather bulletin, light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorm activity are expected in many districts, while some areas may continue to experience relatively dry conditions during the forecast period.
Day 1 Forecast (Till 8:30 AM, March 16)
Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are likely at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Khurda, Nayagarh and Cuttack districts.
The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Balasore, where thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph may occur at isolated places.
Day 2 Forecast (March 16 – March 17)
Rain or thunderstorms are very likely at a few places in Coastal Odisha and districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh and Jharsuguda.
Light rainfall may also occur at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal and Boudh, while the remaining parts of the state are expected to experience mostly dry weather.

Orange Warning: Issued for Mayurbhanj, where thunderstorms with lightning, hailstorms and strong winds of 50–60 kmph are likely at isolated places.

Yellow Warning: Issued for Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Balasore and Bhadrak, with thunderstorms and winds reaching 40–50 kmph.
Similar weather conditions with winds of 30–40 kmph are expected in Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.
Day 3 Forecast (March 17 – March 18)
Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms may occur at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak and Nabarangpur districts.
The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for these areas, indicating thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph.
Day 4 Forecast (March 18 – March 19)
Rain or thunderstorms are likely at isolated places in Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Rayagada, while most other districts are expected to experience mostly dry weather.
A Yellow Warning has been issued for these districts with thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 30–40 kmph.
Day 5 Forecast (March 19 – March 20)
Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are very likely at isolated places across Coastal Odisha, South Interior Odisha, and districts such as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh.
The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Cuttack, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Gajapati, where thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are expected.
Advisory For Residents
The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity. People are urged to avoid open fields, tall trees, electric poles and water bodies during lightning, and to secure loose objects that could be affected by strong winds or hailstorms.
Authorities also recommended that travellers and farmers in vulnerable districts stay updated with weather alerts and take necessary precautions to minimise risks during severe weather conditions.
