UIDAI Completes Over 1 Crore Mandatory Biometric Updates for Schoolchildren Ahead of Competitive Exams

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has successfully completed over one crore Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBUs) for schoolchildren across the country, a major step expected to ease students’ participation in national-level competitive and university entrance examinations such as NEET, JEE, CUET and other centralised admission processes.

The large-scale exercise was carried out in mission mode over five months, covering nearly 83,000 schools nationwide in coordination with state education departments. The initiative ensures that students’ Aadhaar biometric data is updated well before they reach crucial academic stages, where Aadhaar-based authentication is increasingly mandatory for exam registration, identity verification and counselling.

Why Biometric Updates Matter for Students

Aadhaar enrolment for children below the age of five does not include fingerprints and iris scans, making Mandatory Biometric Updates essential once a child crosses the ages of 5 years and 15 years. Without updated biometrics, Aadhaar authentication can fail, potentially creating hurdles during competitive exam registrations, university admissions, scholarship applications and access to government education schemes.

By completing these updates in advance, UIDAI aims to prevent last-minute verification issues that often arise close to examination deadlines, when students have little time to correct authentication errors.

Biometric Camps Held Inside School Premises

One of the key features of the drive was the organization of biometric update camps within school campuses, eliminating the need for students and parents to visit Aadhaar enrolment centers separately. This approach not only saved time and effort but also ensured higher participation, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.

Schools were able to identify students due for biometric updates through UIDAI’s integration with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+), allowing for targeted outreach and timely completion of the process.

Fee Waiver to Encourage Compliance

To promote widespread participation, UIDAI waived charges for Mandatory Biometric Updates for children aged 7 to 15 years starting October 1, 2025, for a period of one year. MBUs for children in the 5–7 and 15–17 age groups continue to remain free of cost, ensuring that financial constraints do not become a barrier to Aadhaar compliance.

Wider Impact and Parallel Efforts

In addition to school-based updates, UIDAI also completed around 1.3 crore MBUs at Aadhaar Enrolment Centers and Aadhaar Seva Kendras across the country. Together, these efforts have significantly strengthened Aadhaar readiness among students who will soon enter the competitive examination ecosystem.

The campaign remains ongoing until all schools are fully covered, reinforcing UIDAI’s focus on early compliance, seamless authentication, and equitable access to education-linked services.
