President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday laid foundation stones and inaugurated a series of development projects worth ₹284 crore in Rairangpur, located in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. The wide-ranging initiatives span healthcare, education, sports, social welfare and urban infrastructure, aimed at strengthening regional facilities and improving the quality of life for local residents.
The President also addressed a public gathering at the Rairangpur Kacheri ground, which was attended by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, state ministers, senior administrative officials and a large number of local residents.
Major Boost to Health, Education and Sports Infrastructure
Among the flagship projects unveiled during the visit, President Murmu laid the foundation stone for a new AYUSH hospital and an Ayurvedic center, to be developed at an estimated cost of ₹85 crore. The facility is expected to strengthen alternative healthcare services and promote wellness-based medical tourism in the region.
A significant thrust was also given to higher education with the announcement of a new campus of the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), involving an investment of ₹100 crore. The proposed campus will enhance agricultural education, research and skill development opportunities for students in northern Odisha.
To encourage sports talent among tribal and rural youth, the President laid the foundation stone for a dedicated archery centre with an outlay of ₹23 crore, a move expected to nurture local sporting potential, particularly in a region known for producing skilled archers.
Urban Development and Beautification of Rairangpur
As part of urban infrastructure development, a ₹35 crore urban beautification project was announced for Rairangpur town. The project includes drainage system upgradation, civic improvements and city development works, aimed at addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges and improving urban living conditions.
Focus on Social and Community Infrastructure
Several social infrastructure projects were also included in the development package. Foundation stones were laid for a 360-bed women’s hostel at a cost of ₹10 crore, aimed at supporting female students and working women. A Brahma Kumari de-addiction center, with an estimated cost of ₹2.50 crore, was also announced to support mental health and rehabilitation initiatives.
In addition, a large auditorium worth ₹27 crore was planned to promote cultural, educational and community activities in the region.
The President also inaugurated an IT campus of Maharaja Sriram Chandra University, which will be developed at a cost of ₹1.76 crore, marking another step towards expanding digital and technical education facilities in Mayurbhanj.
Ministers Emphasize Long-Term Regional Growth
Speaking on the occasion, Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling said the projects would act as a catalyst for long-term regional development. He highlighted the potential of the proposed AYUSH hospital in promoting medical tourism, along with the importance of the OUAT campus, archery center and urban infrastructure upgrades in driving inclusive growth.
Officials said the projects reflect the government’s commitment to balanced development, improved public amenities and empowerment of tribal-dominated regions like Mayurbhanj.
