Army Vehicle Plunges into Gorge in J&K’s Doda: 10 Soldiers Killed, 10 Injured in Tragic Accident

Doda, Jammu and Kashmir: In a heartbreaking incident, at least 10 Indian Army soldiers lost their lives and 10 others were injured after a bullet-proof Army vehicle plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Tuesday. The tragic accident occurred at Khanni Top along the Bhaderwah–Chamba interstate road, a high-altitude and treacherous mountainous stretch known for sharp turns and steep slopes.

The incident was officially confirmed by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

“Deeply saddened at the loss of lives of 10 of our brave Indian Army soldiers in an unfortunate road accident in Doda. We will always remember the outstanding service and supreme sacrifice of our brave soldiers. My deepest condolences to the grieving families,” Sinha said in a post on X.

He further added:

“In this moment of profound sorrow, the entire nation stands united with the bereaved families in solidarity and support. Ten injured soldiers have been airlifted to the hospital. Directed the senior officials to ensure the best possible treatment. Praying for their speedy recovery.”

How the Accident Happened

According to officials, the accident occurred when a bullet-proof Army vehicle carrying 17 personnel was travelling towards a high-altitude forward post. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while navigating the narrow mountain road, causing it to plunge nearly 200 feet into a deep gorge.

The difficult terrain and steep slopes significantly complicated rescue operations.

Rescue and Medical Response

A joint rescue operation was immediately launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police. Initial reports confirmed four soldiers dead at the site, while others were pulled out injured from the wreckage.

Officials stated:

  • Nine soldiers were rescued in injured condition

  • Three critically injured soldiers were airlifted to the military hospital in Udhampur for specialised treatment

  • The remaining injured personnel were taken to nearby medical facilities for emergency care

The injured are currently under close medical supervision, with authorities ensuring advanced treatment and continuous monitoring.

Region Marked by Repeated Tragedies

This tragic accident adds to a series of fatal incidents involving Army personnel in the mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir:

  • January 8, Gulmarg sector: Two Army porters — Layaqat Ahmad Deedard (27) and Ishfaq Ahmad Khatana (33) of Chandoosa, Baramulla — slipped into a deep gorge near the Line of Control while heading to Anita Post. Their bodies were recovered after a two-day search operation.

  • May 2024, Ramban district: Three Army personnel — Sepoys Amit Kumar, Sujeet Kumar, and Man Bahadur — died after their vehicle skidded off National Highway 44 and plunged into a 700-foot-deep gorge near Battery Chashma while travelling in a convoy from Jammu to Srinagar.

These repeated incidents underline the extreme risks faced by soldiers operating in high-altitude, hostile terrain where narrow roads, unpredictable weather, and difficult geography pose constant dangers.

Nation in Mourning

The deaths of the 10 soldiers have triggered widespread grief across the country. Tributes poured in from political leaders, defence officials, veterans, and citizens, honouring the bravery and sacrifice of the जवान (jawans) who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Defence and civil authorities have assured full support to the families of the deceased, including:

  • Financial assistance

  • Administrative support

  • Medical care for the injured

  • Long-term rehabilitation support

A Stark Reminder of the Cost of Service

This tragedy is a solemn reminder that the sacrifices of Indian soldiers extend far beyond combat zones. Even routine movement and logistics operations in difficult terrains involve life-threatening risks, reflecting the unseen dangers of military service in mountainous and border regions.

As rescue operations conclude and investigations begin into the exact cause of the accident, the nation stands united in grief, respect, and solidarity with the families of the fallen soldiers.
