IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts as Heavy Rainfall Likely Across Tamil Nadu Till January 11

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of Tamil Nadu till January 11, as a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal continues to influence weather conditions in the region. In view of the evolving situation, the weather agency has issued orange and yellow alerts for multiple districts, warning of intense rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds.

According to the IMD, the deep depression is expected to cross Sri Lanka by the afternoon of January 10. An official update shared by the meteorological department on social media stated that the system moved nearly northwestwards at a speed of around 8 kmph over the past six hours and was centred over the southwest Bay of Bengal late on January 9. The system is likely to continue moving northwestwards and gradually weaken into a depression within the next few hours.

Districts Under Alert

As per the latest advisory, Thiruvarur, Karaikal and Nagapattinam districts have been placed under an orange alert, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Meanwhile, Chennai, Thanjavur, Sivagangai, Madurai and Tiruchirappalli have been brought under a yellow alert, cautioning residents about moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has further stated that isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore on Saturday. Several other districts may witness intermittent spells of rain, with a generally cloudy sky prevailing over much of the state.

Thunderstorms, Lightning and Wind Conditions

In addition to rainfall, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms with lightning in many parts of Tamil Nadu during the forecast period. Gusty winds may also accompany the weather system, increasing the risk of waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupting normal life in urban and rural pockets.

Authorities have urged district administrations to remain alert and take necessary precautionary measures, particularly in areas prone to flooding and poor drainage.

Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore

Considering the rough sea conditions, the IMD has issued a strong advisory for fishermen, urging them not to venture into the southwest Bay of Bengal, the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till January 10. Sea conditions are expected to remain rough to very rough due to the influence of the depression.

Residents have been advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Disaster management teams have been placed on standby to respond to any weather-related emergencies as Tamil Nadu braces for continued wet conditions over the coming days.
