Bhadrak Schools to Start at 10 AM on Saturdays Amid Severe Cold Wave

In view of the prevailing severe cold wave conditions across Odisha, the Bhadrak district administration has announced a temporary change in school timings to safeguard the health and well-being of students. As per an official order issued by the District Collector, all schools in the district will function from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturdays, replacing the usual early morning schedule.

The revised timing will come into effect from January 10 and remain applicable till February 14, covering the peak winter period. The decision applies uniformly to all government, aided and private schools from Class I to Class XII across Bhadrak district.

District officials said the move has been taken as a precautionary measure to protect children from exposure to extremely low temperatures during early morning hours, when the cold is most severe. Prolonged exposure to such conditions can increase the risk of health issues such as respiratory infections, fever and cold-related ailments, particularly among young children.

Odisha is currently witnessing an intense cold wave, with several districts recording significantly low minimum temperatures. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the harsh winter conditions, accompanied by cold northerly winds and dense fog in some areas, are likely to persist for at least the next two weeks. The weather agency has warned that early morning temperatures may continue to remain well below normal, posing health risks to vulnerable groups.

Officials said that school authorities have been directed to strictly implement the revised timings and ensure that students are not required to reach school during the coldest hours of the day. Schools have also been advised to remain alert and take additional precautions if weather conditions worsen further.

The district administration has appealed to parents to cooperate with the decision and ensure that children are adequately protected from the cold by wearing warm clothing. Authorities added that the situation will be reviewed regularly, and further measures may be taken if the cold wave intensifies.
