Low-Pressure Area Forms Over Southeast Bay of Bengal; Cold Wave and Dense Fog to Grip Odisha

A low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Indian Ocean near the eastern equatorial region, raising weather concerns along the eastern coast. According to meteorological observations, the system developed at around 5:30 pm on January 5 and is expected to become well-marked and intensify further within the next 24 hours. Weather agencies are closely monitoring the evolving system, and further updates are anticipated as more clarity emerges on its movement and intensity.

While the low-pressure system develops over the Bay of Bengal, Odisha is likely to experience a spell of intense cold and dense fog over the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that night temperatures across the state may drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius from today and over the next four days, intensifying winter conditions in several regions.

Cold Wave Tightens Grip On Interior And Southern Odisha

In the last 24 hours, the impact of cold has increased notably in many districts, particularly in hilly and plain areas of Kandhamal and Koraput. The Meteorological Centre has indicated that interior Odisha and southern Odisha will continue to remain under cold conditions, with chilly nights and early mornings expected to cause discomfort to residents.

Minimum temperatures are likely to fall further as dry northerly winds and clear skies during night hours enhance cold conditions. People living in hilly regions and rural pockets have been advised to take necessary precautions against exposure to low temperatures.

Dense Fog Adds To Weather Challenges

Along with severe cold, dense fog is emerging as a major concern across the state. Over the past 24 hours, very dense fog was reported in Boudh district, where visibility dropped to as low as 20 metres, severely affecting road movement. Similar foggy conditions were also observed in Balangir, Koraput and Kandhamal districts.

According to the IMD, dense fog is likely to prevail during early morning and morning hours in many parts of Odisha over the next four days. Poor visibility may disrupt road traffic, rail services and daily activities, especially during peak commuting hours.

Advisory Issued

Authorities have urged commuters to remain cautious, use fog lights, maintain safe driving distances and avoid unnecessary travel during early morning hours. Elderly people, children and those with health issues have been advised to take extra care during the cold wave conditions.

As Odisha braces for falling temperatures, dense fog and the evolving low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, weather officials continue to closely track developments and issue timely advisories to ensure public safety.
