Ganjam: Odisha Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena on Saturday visited Kalinga Ghati along the Ganjam-Kandhamal border to assess the damage caused by two landslides following rainfall associated with a deep depression.
The minister reached the affected area accompanied by the Ganjam Collector and other senior administrative officials. During the visit, the team inspected the damaged portions of the road and reviewed the ground situation.
Kalinga Ghati Closed After Landslides
The administration has sealed Kalinga Ghati indefinitely as a precautionary measure following the landslides.
The route has suffered damage at several locations, with the impact of the landslides visible along different stretches. Authorities are assessing the condition of the road before considering any decision regarding the reopening of the route.
The closure is aimed at preventing vehicles and commuters from entering potentially dangerous sections while assessment and further safety measures are undertaken.
Soil Slips and Falling Rocks Damage Road
Several types of damage have been reported along the affected route.
At some locations, soil and debris slipped down the hillside, damaging roadside guard walls. In other sections, large rocks fell onto the road, obstructing vehicular movement.
Cracks have also reportedly appeared on certain stretches, raising concerns about the stability of the road and the surrounding hillside.
The combination of loose soil, damaged roadside structures and continuing rainfall has added to the safety concerns in the area.
Minister Reviews Situation With Officials
During his inspection, Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena examined the affected sections and discussed the situation with officials accompanying him.
The inspection focused on the extent of damage, the condition of the road and the risks associated with movement through the ghati.
Officials are continuing to monitor the area, particularly because further rainfall could potentially trigger additional soil movement or landslides.
Route to Remain Closed Until Safety Assessment
With the road continuing to pose safety concerns, Kalinga Ghati will remain closed for an indefinite period.
Authorities are expected to assess the damaged stretches and determine the necessary measures before allowing traffic to resume. The condition of the road, guard walls, cracks and surrounding slopes will be important factors in determining when the route can safely be reopened.
The latest development has also highlighted the vulnerability of hilly road corridors in southern Odisha during periods of heavy rainfall and adverse weather.
