The possibility of a third wave of flooding in the Subarnarekha River has triggered fresh concern among residents of Bhograi block in Balasore district, after a sluice gate near the Ausa embankment reportedly developed cracks under sustained pressure from floodwater.
The damaged structure is located close to the Ausa embankment bridge. According to local sources, water has begun entering through the crack, raising concerns about the condition of the sluice gate and the safety of the embankment and surrounding areas.
Cracks Develop Under Floodwater Pressure
The sluice gate reportedly came under intense pressure as the Subarnarekha continued to carry a high volume of floodwater. The appearance of cracks has heightened fears that the structure could suffer further damage if the water pressure continues.
Residents said they had informed officials of the situation and urged the concerned department to take immediate action. However, they alleged that no major corrective measures had been taken so far to prevent water from entering through the damaged portion.
The continued flow of water through the damaged gate has added to concerns among people living near vulnerable parts of the embankment.
Six Gram Panchayats Could Be Affected
Locals fear that a complete failure of the sluice gate could have serious consequences for the surrounding areas. According to sources, nearly six gram panchayats in Bhograi block could potentially be affected if the structure collapses.
The concern comes at a time when residents are already dealing with the impact of repeated flooding. Continuous pressure from the river has increased anxiety over the stability of the embankment and associated structures.
Subarnarekha Still Above Danger Mark
Although the Subarnarekha water level has started to recede gradually, the river is reportedly still flowing above the danger mark.
The gradual fall in water levels has provided some relief, but the damaged sluice gate remains a significant concern. Water entering through the crack could weaken the embankment further if immediate repairs are not undertaken.
Residents have therefore called for urgent strengthening and repair work before the situation deteriorates.

People in the affected areas have urged authorities to inspect the sluice gate and embankment and undertake emergency measures to prevent further water ingress.
With the possibility of another spell of flooding looming, residents fear that any further damage to the structure could worsen the situation and put several villages at risk.
