Balasore: Floodwaters from the Budhabalanga River inundated several parts of Balasore town on Wednesday, leaving many families stranded and disrupting normal life. Ward No. 24 under the Balasore Municipality emerged as one of the worst-affected areas, with floodwater entering residential colonies and cutting off access to numerous houses.
Several homes remain surrounded by waist-deep water, while the ground floors of many buildings have been completely submerged. As water levels continued to rise, several families moved to upper floors and rooftops, awaiting rescue. Residents said movement in the locality has come to a complete standstill.
Residents Await Rescue
Locals alleged that many stranded families are still waiting to be evacuated despite repeated appeals for help.
One resident said the water level began rising rapidly on Tuesday night, prompting locals to shift some families to a nearby school as a precaution.
“We alerted everyone and moved a few families to a nearby school. By Wednesday morning, the water level had increased further. Around 20 houses are submerged, and several people remain trapped. An NDRF team visited the area but informed us that another team would carry out the rescue. It has been two days, and we urge the authorities to rescue those still stranded,” the resident said.
Local Youths Lead Relief Efforts
Another resident described the flooding as a major crisis for the town, saying many people have taken shelter on rooftops while waiting for assistance.
“People are staying on rooftops, but help has not reached everyone. Local youths are rescuing families from Balighat and Sweeper Colony and shifting them to a nearby school. We have also arranged food for the affected families. I appeal to everyone to remain calm and support one another until more rescue teams arrive,” the resident said.
Administration Steps Up Relief Operations
As floodwaters continue to spread across low-lying areas of Balasore, authorities have intensified relief and rescue operations in the district. However, with the Budhabalanga River still flowing above normal levels, several vulnerable areas remain inundated.
Residents continue to remain on high alert, hoping rescue teams will reach those still stranded and that the flood situation improves in the coming days.
