The Indian Navy is set to strengthen its maritime capabilities with the commissioning of INS Mahendragiri (F38), the sixth indigenous stealth frigate under the Project 17A programme, at Visakhapatnam on July 11. Designed and built in India, the advanced warship marks another significant milestone in the country’s journey towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Named after the Mahendragiri mountain range in the Eastern Ghats, the frigate symbolises resilience, strength, and unwavering resolve. It is the first Indian Naval warship to bear the name, making it a unique addition to the Navy’s expanding fleet of indigenous warships.
Advanced Indigenous Warship
INS Mahendragiri has been designed in-house by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. As the sixth vessel in the Project 17A class, it showcases India’s growing expertise in designing and building complex frontline warships with cutting-edge technology.
The frigate incorporates advanced stealth features that significantly reduce its radar signature, enhancing survivability during combat operations. It also features a high level of automation and is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, enabling high-speed operations, long-range deployment, and operational flexibility across diverse maritime missions.
More Than 75% Indigenous Content
With over 75 per cent indigenous content, INS Mahendragiri reflects India’s increasing capability to develop advanced defence platforms using domestic technology and manufacturing expertise. The warship’s construction involved a vast network of Indian industries, including numerous Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), contributing to employment generation and strengthening the country’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The successful completion of the vessel also highlights the growing role of Indian private and public sector industries in supporting the nation’s defence preparedness.
Equipped for Modern Naval Warfare
INS Mahendragiri is equipped with an advanced suite of indigenous weapons, sensors, and combat systems designed to handle a wide range of operational scenarios. Its arsenal includes sophisticated surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile systems, advanced electronic warfare capabilities, comprehensive anti-submarine warfare systems, and an integrated Combat Management System for enhanced operational efficiency.
The multi-role stealth frigate is capable of conducting anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare operations while also undertaking maritime security missions, surveillance patrols, power projection, search and rescue operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), and sustained deployment across strategic maritime zones.
Boost to India’s Maritime Strength
The commissioning of INS Mahendragiri represents another key achievement in the successful execution of the Project 17A programme, which aims to modernise the Indian Navy with next-generation stealth frigates equipped with advanced indigenous technologies.
As more Project 17A warships join the fleet, they are expected to significantly enhance the Navy’s operational capability while reinforcing India’s position as one of the world’s leading indigenous warship-building nations.
Strengthening India’s Role in the Indo-Pacific
With the Indian Navy expanding its blue-water capabilities, INS Mahendragiri is expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and contributing to a secure, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
As India continues to emerge as a preferred security partner in the region, the stealth frigate will serve as a powerful force multiplier, supporting national security, regional stability, and maritime cooperation.
Mission-ready from the day of its commissioning, INS Mahendragiri embodies its motto—“Mighty, Majestic, Matchless”—and is set to become a key asset in the Indian Navy’s modern combat fleet.
