Centre Appoints N. S. Raja Subramani as New Chief of Defence Staff

In a major development in India’s top military leadership, the Centre has appointed Lieutenant General (Retd.) N. S. Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He will also serve as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs, taking charge from the date he assumes office. The appointment was officially announced by the Government of India on Saturday.

He will succeed Anil Chauhan, whose extended tenure as CDS is scheduled to conclude on May 30, 2026. The appointment comes at a crucial stage as India continues pushing ahead with major defence reforms, including greater jointness among the armed forces and the proposed theatre command structure.

Four decades of military experience

Lt Gen N. S. Raja Subramani brings with him more than 40 years of distinguished service in the Indian Army.

Before this appointment, he had been serving as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat since September 2025. Earlier, he held some of the Indian Army’s most significant senior appointments, including:

  • Vice Chief of Army Staff from July 2024 to July 2025
  • General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024

These assignments gave him wide exposure to operational readiness, military planning and strategic administration at the highest levels.

Extensive operational and command background

Commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985, Lt Gen Subramani has served in some of India’s most demanding operational environments.

His field experience includes:

  • Counter-insurgency operations in Assam under Operation Rhino
  • Key command assignments in Jammu and Kashmir
  • Leadership roles along the western front

He has commanded an infantry brigade, a mountain division, and the prestigious 2 Corps, one of the Indian Army’s principal strike formations.

Strategic and international assignments

Beyond operational command, Lt Gen Subramani has held several crucial staff and instructional appointments.

His assignments include:

  • Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan
  • Deputy Director General of Military Intelligence
  • Chief Instructor at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington
  • Chief of Staff, Northern Command

These roles underline his experience in both military diplomacy and long-term strategic planning.

Academic credentials and honours

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, Lt Gen Subramani also attended the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom and the National Defence College in New Delhi.

Academically, he holds:

  • A Master’s degree from King’s College London
  • An MPhil in Defence Studies from University of Madras

During his distinguished career, he has been awarded:

  • Ati Vishisht Seva Medal
  • Sena Medal
  • Vishisht Seva Medal

Key role in India’s military transformation

With India moving toward deeper military integration and restructuring of combat commands, Lt Gen N. S. Raja Subramani is expected to play a central role in accelerating defence reforms, strengthening tri-service coordination, and enhancing military preparedness in an increasingly complex security environment.

His appointment signals continuity in India’s efforts to modernise its defence architecture and improve joint operational capability across the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force.
