A low pressure area may develop over the Bay of Bengal around May 10, according to projections from major international weather models, raising fresh attention over evolving pre-monsoon weather conditions in eastern India.
Weather models suggest that the potential system could take shape over the southeast Bay of Bengal, though its strength, track and future impact remain uncertain at this stage.
Global models indicate possible formation
The Global Forecast System had earlier indicated the likelihood of a low pressure area forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal.
Now, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts has also projected the possible development of a low pressure system near the coasts of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu around May 10.
The convergence of projections from both global models has increased the possibility of weather activity over the region, although meteorologists caution that model guidance can still change over the next few days.
Intensity and movement still unclear
Weather experts say there is no firm indication yet on whether the system will intensify further or remain weak after formation.
Its eventual movement also remains uncertain, as atmospheric conditions over the Bay of Bengal are still evolving. At present, meteorologists believe it is too early to predict whether the system could move towards India’s east coast or drift elsewhere.
Kalbaisakhi rain continues in Odisha
Meanwhile, a trough line persisting over central India continues to influence weather over Odisha.
Under its impact, several districts in the state have been witnessing Kalbaisakhi-related rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the past few days. Pre-monsoon weather activity has remained active across many parts of Odisha, bringing intermittent showers and lightning.
Clearer picture likely after May 11
Meteorologists believe the behaviour of the possible low pressure area may become clearer only after May 11.
By then, the trough line over central India is expected to weaken gradually. Experts say this weakening could play a crucial role in shaping the development, intensity and direction of the weather system over the Bay of Bengal.
No official IMD confirmation yet
So far, the India Meteorological Department has not issued any official confirmation regarding the formation of a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
Until an official forecast is released, weather agencies and experts are continuing to closely monitor developments over the sea.
