Bhubaneswar Police Play Soothing Music at Traffic Signals to Ease Commuter Stress

In a unique step to improve the daily commuting experience, the Commissionerate Police has started playing calming music at busy intersections across Bhubaneswar to reduce stress during long traffic halts.

Music at signals to calm commuters

The initiative involves broadcasting soft, soothing music through Public Address Systems (PAS) installed at 32 major traffic posts. These systems are connected to CCTV networks and are centrally monitored from the Smart City control centre, ensuring seamless coordination.

The move comes as a response to increasing traffic congestion in the city, which often leads to long waiting times at signals—especially during peak hours and extreme summer heat.

Beyond music: Real-time alerts and awareness

Apart from playing music, the PAS is also being used for public awareness and real-time communication. Traffic officials are using the system to:

  • Share live traffic updates
  • Alert commuters about diversions due to rallies or road incidents
  • Promote road safety awareness

Violations such as crossing stop lines, riding without helmets, or not wearing seat belts are identified via surveillance, and offenders are immediately warned through announcements.

Positive response from residents

The initiative has received encouraging feedback from commuters, many of whom say it helps ease frustration during long waits, particularly amid ongoing heatwave conditions.

Residents have described the experience as “refreshing” and “calming,” noting that the music creates a more relaxed environment at otherwise stressful traffic junctions.

Triggered by rising congestion issues

The move follows recent incidents that exposed the city’s traffic challenges, including a major disruption near the Palasuni Bridge where a truck fire led to hours-long gridlock in the twin cities.

A step towards smarter urban mobility

Officials say the initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate smart solutions into urban traffic management. While music at signals offers immediate relief, authorities acknowledge the need for long-term infrastructure upgrades to address congestion more effectively.

With this blend of technology and human-centric design, Bhubaneswar aims to make commuting not just efficient, but also more pleasant for its residents.
