Odisha Weather Update: Thunderstorms, Heatwave and Humidity to Prevail Over Next 5 Days

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to experience a mix of thunderstorms, rising temperatures, and humid conditions over the next five days, according to the latest forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The outlook points to contrasting weather patterns across the state, with rainfall activity in some regions and heatwave-like conditions intensifying in others.

Rainfall and Thunderstorm Activity

Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely at isolated places, particularly in coastal, southern, and tribal districts such as Puri, Khordha, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.

Northern districts including Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar may also witness intermittent thunderstorm activity.

The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph, especially during afternoon and evening hours.

Heatwave Conditions in Western Odisha

Despite rainfall in some areas, western districts are likely to face intense heat. Regions such as Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Balangir, and Sundargarh are expected to experience heatwave conditions from Day 3 onwards.

The heatwave may gradually extend to Kalahandi, Bargarh, and Nuapada in subsequent days.

Warm night conditions are also likely in isolated areas, adding to discomfort even after sunset.

Coastal Areas to Remain Hot and Humid

Coastal districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, and Khordha will continue to experience hot and humid weather, raising the risk of heat-related discomfort.

Day-wise Weather Outlook

  • Day 1–2: Scattered thunderstorms in northern and southern districts; humid conditions along the coast
  • Day 3: Expansion of thunderstorm activity; onset of heatwave in western Odisha
  • Day 4–5: Reduced rainfall mainly in southern regions; intensified heatwave in western districts; continued humidity along the coast

Advisory for Residents

Authorities have advised residents to:

  • Avoid open areas during thunderstorms and lightning
  • Limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours
  • Stay hydrated and follow health advisories
  • Take special care of children, the elderly, and outdoor workers

Mixed Weather Ahead

With thunderstorms offering only temporary relief and heatwave conditions intensifying in parts, Odisha is likely to face a challenging weather phase in the coming days.
