New Delhi: The Central government has issued a fresh gazette notification allowing the temporary supply of Superior Kerosene Oil (SKO) through the Public Distribution System (PDS) in 21 states and Union Territories, citing global energy supply disruptions caused by ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The move has been introduced as a short-term relief measure to support household cooking and lighting needs, particularly in regions that had previously phased out kerosene distribution due to improved access to LPG and other energy sources.
Temporary Relief Amid Global Energy Uncertainty
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the decision has been taken to help households manage potential energy shortages that may arise due to instability in global fuel supply chains.
Officials said the temporary measure is intended to ensure that vulnerable households have access to an alternative fuel source in case LPG supply disruptions occur during the ongoing international crisis affecting energy markets.
Fuel Stations Authorised to Stock Kerosene
Under the new notification, designated fuel outlets in kerosene-free regions will now be permitted to store and distribute Superior Kerosene Oil.
The government has specified that:
- Up to two fuel stations per district may be authorised to store kerosene
- Preference will be given to company-owned outlets operated by public sector oil marketing companies
- Each authorised outlet can stock a maximum of 5,000 litres of kerosene
Authorities added that the storage and distribution of SKO will be carried out strictly in accordance with prescribed safety standards and operational guidelines.
Relaxation of Licensing Norms
To ensure the rapid rollout of the scheme, the government has temporarily relaxed certain licensing requirements for dealers and transporters involved in kerosene supply.
However, the Ministry clarified that regulatory oversight and safety protocols will remain fully in place to prevent misuse and ensure safe handling of the fuel.
Restricted for Domestic Use Only
Officials stressed that the kerosene supplied under this arrangement will be strictly limited to domestic purposes, specifically:
- Cooking
- Household lighting
The government has warned that the fuel must not be diverted for commercial or industrial use, and monitoring mechanisms will be in place to prevent misuse.
Valid for 60 Days
The notification states that the temporary kerosene supply arrangement will come into effect immediately and will remain valid for 60 days or until further orders are issued by the government.
States and UTs Covered
The measure will be implemented across 21 states and Union Territories, including major regions such as:
- Delhi
- Uttar Pradesh
- Gujarat
- Rajasthan
The initiative forms part of the Centre’s broader effort to shield households from the impact of global energy disruptions and ensure uninterrupted access to essential fuels.
Authorities said the government will continue to monitor the global energy situation closely and take further steps if required to maintain stable fuel availability for citizens.
