Middle East Conflict Hits Odisha’s Street Food Sector as LPG Shortage Drives Up Costs

The ongoing conflict in West Asia is beginning to ripple through local economies in India, with LPG supply disruptions impacting the hospitality sector and small food vendors across parts of Odisha.

While there is no direct supply cut, the indirect effects of global energy instability are being felt on the ground—especially among roadside eateries and small-scale vendors.

Street Food Vendors Struggle with Rising Costs

Small traders operating breakfast and fast-food stalls are facing mounting pressure due to:

  • Rising LPG prices
  • Irregular cylinder supply
  • Declining customer footfall

Food prices have already begun to climb. Items that were earlier sold for ₹5 are now priced at ₹7 or more in some areas, affecting affordability for daily consumers.

A resident from Balasore said basic meals are becoming harder to manage within tight budgets, forcing people to cut down on portions or skip items.

LPG Shortage and Price Surge

Vendors report a noticeable shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, with supply delays affecting operations in multiple cities.

  • Earlier price: ₹2,000–₹2,100 per cylinder
  • Current price: Around ₹2,500

This sharp increase has compelled vendors to raise food prices by ₹5 or more per plate, squeezing already thin margins.

Black Marketing Concerns Emerge

The shortage has also triggered concerns about illegal practices. Reports suggest LPG cylinders are being sold at inflated rates, sometimes double the price, in certain areas.

Economist Trinath Lenka highlighted the broader issue, linking the crisis to global geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions.

He stressed the need for stricter monitoring to curb unauthorised sales and ensure fair distribution.

Global Crisis, Local Impact

The situation is tied to escalating tensions involving Donald Trump and Iran, which have disrupted key energy supply routes and increased volatility in global oil and gas markets.

Government efforts to prioritise domestic LPG supply are also indirectly affecting commercial availability, further straining small businesses.

Risk of Business Closures

If supply issues persist, many small vendors could face:

  • Reduced earnings
  • Loss of customers
  • Potential shutdowns

Experts warn that the situation may worsen unless supply chains stabilise and prices ease in the coming weeks.
