Visakhapatnam: In a significant step towards strengthening maritime capabilities, the Indian Navy is set to induct its latest stealth warship, INS Taragiri, on April 3, 2026, at Visakhapatnam. The commissioning ceremony will be attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Advanced Stealth Frigate Under Project 17A
INS Taragiri is the fourth stealth frigate under the Project 17A programme, representing a new generation of technologically advanced warships. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, the vessel weighs approximately 6,670 tonnes.
The warship highlights India’s growing push for defence self-reliance, with over 75% indigenous content. The project has also supported more than 200 MSMEs, contributing to employment generation and strengthening the domestic defence ecosystem.
Stealth & Propulsion Capabilities
Designed with enhanced stealth features, INS Taragiri has a low radar signature, improving survivability in combat scenarios.
It is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, enabling:
- High operational speeds
- Efficient long-range deployments
- Enhanced mission flexibility

The frigate is equipped with a powerful arsenal, including:
- Supersonic surface-to-surface missiles
- Advanced air defence systems
- Anti-submarine warfare capabilities
