In a major step toward modernising highway infrastructure, the National Highways Authority of India is set to deploy an AI-driven dashcam monitoring system across nearly 40,000 km of national highways. The initiative aims to enhance road safety, improve maintenance efficiency, and enable real-time, data-driven decision-making.
Weekly Surveillance via Smart Patrol Vehicles
Under the new system, Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs) will be equipped with advanced dashboard cameras to conduct weekly inspections of highway stretches. These dashcams will capture high-resolution images and videos, which will be analysed using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning models.
The technology can automatically detect over 30 types of road defects, allowing authorities to identify and address issues much faster.
Focus on Road Quality & Safety
The AI system will monitor critical infrastructure elements, including:
-
Road surface conditions such as potholes, cracks, and uneven layers
-
Lane markings, crash barriers, and street lighting
-
Encroachments like illegal parking and unauthorised signage
-
Unsafe median cuts and violations
Periodic night-time surveys will also be conducted to assess visibility factors like reflectors and lighting systems.
Comprehensive Maintenance Tracking
Beyond surface-level defects, the system will flag:
-
Waterlogging and drainage issues
-
Overgrown vegetation
-
Blocked drains
-
Condition of bus stops and roadside infrastructure
To streamline operations, the country has been divided into five zones, each responsible for monitoring and analysis in its region.
Centralised Data & Smart Analytics
A dedicated digital platform will be developed to:
-
Process and store data
-
Run AI-based analytics
-
Provide interactive dashboards for officials
All insights will be integrated into NHAI’s central repository, enabling authorities to track road conditions over time and monitor repair progress efficiently.
Towards Smarter, Safer Highways
Officials believe the initiative will:
-
Improve road safety standards
-
Reduce response time for repairs
-
Enhance commuter experience
-
Enable proactive infrastructure management
By leveraging cutting-edge technology, NHAI is moving towards a smart, predictive, and technology-driven highway management system for India’s rapidly expanding road network.
