In a significant move to enhance passenger safety and improve onboard food quality, Indian Railways has rolled out a QR code-based verification system for authorised catering staff along with digitally traceable food packets across trains.
The initiative aims to eliminate unauthorised vendors and ensure passengers receive hygienic, verified food services during their journey.
QR Code ID Cards for Catering Staff
Under the new system, all authorised catering personnel—including vendors, helpers, and onboard staff—must carry QR code-enabled identity cards.
These smart IDs allow real-time verification of:
-
Name and identity details
-
Aadhaar credentials
-
Medical fitness status
-
Police verification records
Officials said this step will ensure that only verified staff are allowed to serve passengers, reducing security risks and improving accountability.
Traceable Food Packets for Transparency
In another major reform, QR codes are now being printed on food packets supplied onboard. By scanning these codes, passengers and authorities can access key details such as:
-
Source kitchen
-
Date and time of preparation
-
Quality control information
This move is expected to significantly boost transparency and trust in railway catering services.
Crackdown on Unauthorised Vendors
Railways authorities have reiterated that unauthorised vending is strictly prohibited under the Railways Act, 1989 and is punishable under Section 144.
To enforce this:
-
Regular inspections are being conducted
-
Railway Protection Force (RPF) is carrying out special drives
-
Joint monitoring is being done by railway officials and IRCTC
Improved Hygiene & Food Safety Measures
Indian Railways has also strengthened its catering ecosystem with a focus on hygiene and quality:
-
Meals supplied from designated base kitchens
-
Kitchens upgraded with CCTV surveillance
-
Mandatory use of standardised branded raw materials
-
Regular deep cleaning and pest control in pantry cars and kitchens
Strict Monitoring & Certification
To maintain high standards:
-
All catering units must have certification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India
-
Dedicated Food Safety Supervisors deployed at base kitchens
-
IRCTC supervisors monitor onboard services
-
Regular food sampling, audits, and surprise inspections conducted
Staff Training & Passenger Experience
The railways is also investing in regular training programmes for catering staff, focusing on:
-
Hygiene practices
-
Customer service
-
Communication skills
-
Professional conduct
A Step Towards Safer Travel
Officials stated that the integration of digital verification, strict enforcement, and upgraded infrastructure will ensure safe, hygienic, and reliable food services for millions of passengers daily.
The initiative marks a major step in modernising railway services while effectively curbing the long-standing issue of unauthorised vendors on trains.
