The Government of India has reportedly extended the booking interval for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders from 21 days to 25 days, according to media reports citing official sources. The move is aimed at preventing hoarding and black marketing of LPG cylinders while ensuring fair distribution among domestic consumers.
Officials said the decision comes after authorities noticed unusual booking patterns in recent months. Some consumers who earlier booked LPG cylinders approximately once every 50–55 days were suddenly placing orders as frequently as every 15 days, raising concerns about possible hoarding and attempts to create artificial shortages in the market.
The government believes that extending the booking interval will help regulate demand and maintain a stable supply chain for households across the country.
Measures to Strengthen Domestic Supply
Alongside the change in booking rules, the Centre has reportedly directed oil refineries to increase LPG production in order to meet the growing demand. Authorities have also instructed that domestic LPG connections should be prioritised over commercial connections, ensuring that household consumers remain the primary beneficiaries of the fuel supply system.
These steps are expected to strengthen the availability of LPG cylinders for millions of families that depend on the fuel for daily cooking needs.
Expanding Global LPG Partnerships
To further strengthen the country’s energy security, the government is also exploring additional international partnerships for LPG supply. Several countries have reportedly expressed interest in exporting LPG to India.
Nations including Algeria, Australia, Canada and Norway have approached India with offers to supply LPG, indicating strong global interest in supporting the country’s growing energy needs.
Officials said expanding the network of LPG suppliers will help diversify imports, maintain supply stability, and reduce the risk of shortages in the domestic market.
The latest measures are part of the government’s broader efforts to ensure transparent LPG distribution, prevent market manipulation, and guarantee uninterrupted supply for households across India.
