IndiGo Delhi–Manchester Flight Returns Mid-Air After 7 Hours Due to Middle East Airspace Restrictions

An international flight operated by IndiGo from New Delhi to Manchester in the United Kingdom was forced to make a mid-air U-turn on Monday after flying for nearly seven hours, following sudden airspace restrictions linked to escalating tensions in West Asia.

The flight, 6E 033, was being operated in partnership with the Norwegian carrier Norse Atlantic Airways. According to flight tracking platform Flightradar24, the aircraft turned around while flying near the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Airspace Restrictions Force Return

An IndiGo spokesperson said the flight had to return to its origin due to last-minute airspace restrictions caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

“Due to the evolving situation in and around the Middle East, some of our flights may take longer routes or experience diversions. Our flight 6E 033 operating from Delhi to Manchester had to return to its origin due to last-minute airspace restrictions,” the airline said in a statement.

The airline added that it is working with relevant authorities to explore options to resume the journey, while prioritising the safety of passengers and crew.

Conflict in West Asia Disrupts Aviation Routes

The crisis in the region intensified after military actions involving United States and Israel against Iran around ten days ago. Since then, Iran has reportedly launched retaliatory strikes targeting American bases across the Gulf region.

Countries including Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain have been affected by the widening conflict.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has accused Iran of aggression, while Tehran maintains that its strikes are aimed at American bases in response to what it calls an unprovoked attack.

Flights Taking Alternate Routes

Airspace across parts of the Middle East has largely been closed amid the escalating tensions, forcing airlines to reroute or delay several international flights. However, some flights to and from the UAE and other Gulf destinations have continued to operate through longer alternate routes.

The incident highlights the growing impact of the regional conflict on global aviation routes, with airlines closely monitoring the situation to ensure passenger safety.
