The India office of the Gates Foundation has confirmed that Bill Gates will attend the India AI Impact Summit 2026 and deliver his keynote address as scheduled, putting to rest speculation that he might skip the high-profile event in New Delhi. The clarification was issued through an official statement on X after uncertainty arose due to his name not appearing on parts of the summit’s online speaker listings.
In its statement, the Foundation emphasised that India has emerged as a global leader in artificial intelligence, supported by one of the world’s largest AI talent pools and rapid adoption of AI across sectors. It added that AI is playing a central role in India’s long-term development vision under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with a strong focus on inclusive growth and responsible innovation.
The Foundation also highlighted India’s collaborative public–private ecosystem — involving government agencies, startups, academia and industry — as a model for developing AI solutions that are scalable, inclusive and globally relevant.
Summit Focus: AI Governance, Policy and Global Cooperation
The India AI Impact Summit 2026 is being held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi and brings together global technology leaders, policymakers, researchers and industry executives. The summit agenda focuses on AI governance, regulatory frameworks, ethical deployment and international cooperation in emerging technologies.
Participants from more than 30 countries are attending the summit and associated expo events. The gathering is positioned as a major Global South platform for shaping future AI policy and cross-border collaboration.
Top technology leaders, including Sundar Pichai and Sam Altman of OpenAI, are also scheduled to participate in key sessions and discussions. Organisers aim to use the summit to showcase India’s AI capabilities and its expanding innovation ecosystem.
India Visit Includes State-Level Tech and Development Talks
During his India visit, Gates travelled to Andhra Pradesh, where he was received by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and state minister Nara Lokesh. Discussions focused on potential collaborations in health, agriculture, education and technology-enabled governance models.
State officials said the talks were aligned with long-term development planning and explored partnerships involving innovation, data-driven public services and social sector delivery.
Background and Ongoing Public Role
Bill Gates stepped down as chairman of Microsoft in 2014 but continues to lead global philanthropic and development initiatives through his foundation. He remains actively engaged in technology, health and climate-focused programmes worldwide.
Despite online criticism and political reactions surrounding his visit, the Foundation’s latest clarification confirms that his participation in the AI Impact Summit remains unchanged and on schedule.
