In a major crackdown on maritime crime, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has dismantled an international smuggling syndicate involved in the illegal trade of cheap oil, operating through a sophisticated sea-based network. The operation, carried out on Friday, led to the interception of multiple vessels off the west coast of India, marking a significant success in curbing cross-border economic offences.
Complex Sea-Air Route Used To Evade Duties
According to an official statement, the smuggling network sourced large volumes of oil and oil-based cargo from conflict-affected regions. To bypass customs duties and regulatory checks, the cargo was transferred mid-sea in international waters to motor tankers, creating a complex supply chain designed to evade detection.
The syndicate involved handlers operating from several countries, who coordinated vessel movements, cargo transfers, and sales across maritime zones. Authorities said the vessels frequently altered their identities and documentation to avoid scrutiny, with ownership traced to entities based outside India.
Digital Surveillance Triggers Interception
The operation was initiated after digital surveillance systems flagged suspicious tanker movements within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The ICG launched a detailed investigation, analysing vessel movement patterns, electronic data, and maritime traffic records.
Based on the intelligence gathered, three suspect vessels were identified and intercepted nearly 100 nautical miles west of Mumbai on Thursday. Specialized ICG boarding teams conducted thorough inspections, verified ship documents, and interrogated crew members, confirming the existence of an organized smuggling operation.
Vessels To Be Handed Over For Further Action
Following the interception, the seized vessels are expected to be escorted to Mumbai, where they will be handed over to Indian Customs and other law enforcement agencies for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Officials said the case highlights the growing challenge of maritime smuggling and the increasing use of technology by criminal networks to exploit international waters.
Strengthening Maritime Security
The successful operation underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s enhanced digital surveillance capabilities and robust maritime presence. It also reinforces India’s role as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region and a key enforcer of the international rules-based maritime order.
Authorities said sustained vigilance and coordinated action remain crucial to countering transnational maritime crimes that threaten economic and national security.
