Malda (West Bengal): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday flagged off India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train on the Howrah–Guwahati (Kamakhya) route, marking a historic milestone in the country’s railway modernization journey. The inaugural run was flagged off from Malda Town station in north Bengal, while the Prime Minister also virtually flagged off the return Guwahati–Howrah service.
Designed to meet the evolving transportation needs of a fast-growing nation, the fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat sleeper train is aimed at redefining long-distance rail travel in India. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the new service will offer passengers an “airline-like travel experience at economical fares”, combining speed, comfort and safety.
Faster, Safer and More Comfortable Long-Distance Travel
The introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper train is expected to significantly enhance long-distance connectivity between eastern India and the Northeast. The train will reduce travel time by around 2.5 hours on the Howrah–Guwahati route, making overnight journeys more efficient and convenient for passengers.
Officials said the sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat train has been specially developed to ensure greater comfort on long hauls, with modern coaches, enhanced safety features and improved passenger amenities. The reduction in travel time is also expected to benefit business travellers, students and migrant workers who frequently commute between the two regions.

Boost to Tourism and Religious Travel
The PMO statement noted that the new train service will provide a major boost to tourism and religious travel, particularly to important destinations in Assam, West Bengal and the wider Northeast. Guwahati serves as a key gateway to several prominent religious and tourist sites, including the Kamakhya temple, making the improved rail connectivity especially significant.
By improving accessibility and reducing journey fatigue, the Vande Bharat sleeper train is expected to encourage more people to travel by rail, supporting both regional tourism and local economies.
Infrastructure Push Worth ₹3,250 Crore
Later in the day, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to address a public programme in Malda, where he will dedicate multiple rail and road infrastructure projects to the nation and lay the foundation stone for new initiatives. These projects, collectively worth ₹3,250 crore, are aimed at strengthening connectivity and accelerating development across West Bengal and the Northeast.
The infrastructure push aligns with the government’s broader vision of improving transport networks to support economic growth, regional integration and ease of movement.
Political Significance Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections
The train flag-off comes during PM Modi’s two-day visit to eastern India, during which he is scheduled to criss-cross poll-bound West Bengal and Assam. The visit blends high-profile infrastructure launches with strong political outreach, as preparations intensify for the 2026 Assembly elections in both states.
Observers note that the rollout of landmark projects such as the Vande Bharat sleeper train underscores the Centre’s focus on development-driven messaging, particularly in strategically important eastern and northeastern regions.
