Cold Wave Returns to Odisha, Night Temperatures Dip Sharply Across Several Districts

Cold wave conditions have made a strong comeback in Odisha, with a significant drop in night temperatures affecting several parts of the state. According to temperature data recorded till 5:30 am on Tuesday, Jharsuguda emerged as one of the coldest places in Odisha, registering a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. Keonjhar followed closely at 11 degrees Celsius, while Chandbali recorded 13.8 degrees Celsius.

The cold spell was not limited to the western and northern regions alone, as the chill was also felt in coastal districts. The state capital Bhubaneswar once again saw the mercury fall below the 15-degree mark, recording a minimum temperature of 14 degrees Celsius. Balasore reported a minimum of 14.2 degrees Celsius, indicating the widespread nature of the cold conditions across the state.

Weather Pattern Responsible for Temperature Drop

Meteorological officials attributed the sharp fall in night temperatures to the influx of cold and dry northerly and north-westerly winds sweeping across the region. These winds are being driven by the activation of a pressure belt over the central parts of the country, which is allowing cold air to move towards eastern India, including Odisha.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that night temperatures are likely to fall further over the next few days. As the strength of the northerly winds increases, the moisture content in the atmosphere is expected to reduce, intensifying the cold wave conditions. In addition, the ongoing influence of western disturbances is also contributing to the prevailing cold weather. Officials said there is no immediate relief in sight, and similar cold conditions are likely to persist for the next four to five days.

Cold and Fog Disrupt Daily Life

Reports indicate that severe cold and fog gripped Odisha soon after the New Year, affecting normal life in several districts. Although there was a brief rise in temperature over the past two days, the mercury dropped again on Tuesday, reviving cold wave conditions across the state.

Both northern and southern districts are currently experiencing intense cold along with fog, leading to reduced visibility and discomfort during early morning and late night hours. While Cuttack and Bhubaneswar are not witnessing foggy conditions at present, temperatures in both cities are expected to decline further during the night.

According to the forecast, the nighttime temperature in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack may dip by another 2 to 3 degrees Celsius and remain low for at least the next four days. Authorities have advised people, especially the elderly, children and those with health issues, to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the biting cold.
