Senior Congress leader and former party president Sonia Gandhi has been admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi after experiencing respiratory discomfort, according to multiple reports on Tuesday. Hospital sources said the 79-year-old leader was admitted on Monday evening as a precautionary measure and is currently under medical observation.
As per an official statement from the hospital, Sonia Gandhi has been administered antibiotics along with other supportive medications. Doctors have confirmed that her condition remains stable and that she is responding well to the ongoing treatment. A hospital official told news agency PTI that the admission was routine in nature and that she is being monitored by a chest specialist.
Hospital authorities said Sonia Gandhi has a history of chronic cough and frequently visits the hospital for regular medical check-ups. Following a detailed medical examination, doctors observed a mild exacerbation of her bronchial asthma, which they attributed to the prevailing cold weather conditions and deteriorating air quality in the national capital.
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Chairman Ajay Swaroop said the respiratory discomfort was triggered by environmental factors. “After clinical evaluation, it was found that her bronchial asthma had mildly worsened due to the combined impact of cold weather and air pollution. As a precaution, she was admitted for observation and medical management,” he said.
He further added that there is no cause for concern at present. “Her condition is absolutely stable. She is responding positively to treatment, and the medical team is closely monitoring her progress. A decision regarding discharge will be taken based on her clinical recovery and is likely within a day or two,” Swaroop stated.
This is not the first time the Congress MP has been hospitalized in recent months. In June 2025, Sonia Gandhi was admitted to the same hospital after suffering from a severe stomach infection and was discharged after four days of treatment. Later that month, she also underwent a routine health check-up at the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla.
Party leaders and supporters have expressed relief after reports confirmed her stable condition. Further updates are expected as doctors continue to monitor her health.
