Odisha to Intensify Vehicle Checks From January 1, Fuel May Be Denied Without Valid PUC Certificate

Vehicle checking across Odisha will be significantly intensified from January 1, with enforcement agencies directed to take strict action against motorists violating motor vehicle laws, traffic rules and pollution norms. The statewide enforcement drive will coincide with National Road Safety Month in January and will involve heightened vigilance across both urban and rural areas.

Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur announced that Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs) and other enforcement teams have been instructed to strictly implement road safety regulations and ensure compliance with mandatory vehicle documentation. Emphasizing accident prevention, Thakur urged motorists to follow traffic rules and maintain valid documents. “Drivers must follow road safety rules. This will help prevent accidents. Strict action will be taken against those violating motor vehicle laws,” he said.

Strong Focus on Pollution Compliance

A major focus of the upcoming drive will be Pollution Under Control (PUC) certification. The Transport Department has already held meetings with petrol pump owners and fuel dealers across the state, instructing them to create awareness among motorists regarding the mandatory PUC requirement.

Petrol pumps have been directed to display banners and notices prominently, advising vehicle owners to obtain valid PUC certificates. According to officials, this step aims to ensure motorists are informed well in advance before enforcement is tightened.

“There is still time. Vehicle owners should get their PUC certificates done immediately,” Thakur said, warning motorists not to delay compliance until inspections begin in full force.

Fuel Supply Linked to PUC Certificate

In a significant move, the Transport Commissioner confirmed that vehicles without valid pollution certificates will not be supplied fuel. “Those who do not have a valid pollution certificate will not get fuel. This decision has been taken after meetings with petrol dealers and oil companies,” he said, adding that coordination with oil marketing companies is already in place to ensure smooth implementation.

National Road Safety Month to See Strict Enforcement

Vehicle checks will be intensified throughout National Road Safety Month, observed from January 1 to January 31. Enforcement teams will carry out frequent inspections across the state, with no relaxation or grace period announced once the drive begins. Sources indicated that the rules will be uniformly enforced from the very first day of the New Year.

Motorists have been advised to ensure compliance with all road safety and pollution norms to avoid penalties, fuel denial and legal action during the upcoming enforcement drive.
