Ayodhya– Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday ceremonially unfurled the saffron ‘Dharma Dhwaj’ (religious flag) atop the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, marking the formal completion of the grand temple’s construction. The event, known as ‘Dhwajarohan’, was attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi described the saffron flag as more than just a symbol; a testament to a centuries-old resolve and a guide for the nation.
“The saffron flag hoisted at the temple is a symbol of resolve, guiding us on the path of awakening and dedication,” PM Modi stated. “It will inspire us to keep our word, even if it costs us our life. ‘Pran jaaye par vachan na jaaye, jo kaha jaaye wohi kia jaaye’ (A promise must be kept, even at the cost of one’s life, what is said must be done).”
The Prime Minister emphasized that the flag represents the embodiment of Brahma, where truth (Satya) and Dharma (righteousness) are eternally established, symbolising their ultimate triumph.
Healing Wounds of Centuries
Reflecting on the historical significance of the moment, PM Modi spoke of a profound spiritual and emotional fulfillment for devotees worldwide.
“Today, the entire India and the world are Ram-may (immersed in Ram). The wounds of centuries are being healed. The pain of centuries is being put to rest today. The resolve of centuries is being fulfilled today,” he said. “Today is the completion of that sacrifice whose fire remained lit for 500 years.”
A Symbol of Values and Culture
The 10-feet high and 20-feet long saffron flag was hoisted onto the shikhar (spire) using a button mechanism. The flag itself is rich with symbolism, bearing the image of a radiant Sun—representing Lord Ram’s Suryavanshi lineage and valour—along with the sacred symbol ‘Om,’ and the Kovidara tree, which is associated with the ideals of Ram Rajya. The temple’s shikhar is constructed in the traditional North Indian Nagara architectural style.
PM Modi highlighted Ayodhya as the city where Lord Ram demonstrated the essence of human values and culture. He noted the transformation of Ram: “When Ram went into exile from Ayodhya, he was a prince, but when he returned, he returned as the epitome of righteousness, Maryada Purushottam Ram.”
The Dhwajarohan ceremony comes nearly two years after the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ (consecration ceremony) of the Ram Lalla idol, which took place in January 2024. The successful flag hoisting marks a landmark moment, formally concluding the construction phase of the main temple complex.
