Delhi Air Quality Likely to Worsen; GRAP 4 Measures Activated Under GRAP 3 as AQI Nears ‘Severe’ Range

New Delhi: As Delhi’s air quality continues to stagnate in the ‘very poor’ category, authorities have decided to enforce selected Stage 4 (GRAP 4) measures under Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced.

On Saturday morning, Delhi recorded an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of 360, firmly in the ‘very poor’ range and edging toward ‘severe’. According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences’ Air Quality Early Warning System, the national capital’s air quality is expected to deteriorate further, slipping into the ‘severe’ zone in the coming days due to stagnant winds and winter inversion.

GRAP 4 Measures Now Implemented Under GRAP 3

In a precautionary move, CAQM has allowed the implementation of the following GRAP 4 measures while Stage 3 is still in effect:

🔹 NCR state governments and GNCTD may permit public, private, and municipal offices to operate at 50% staff capacity, with the remaining employees working from home.

🔹 The Central Government may also decide to allow work-from-home for central government employees.

This decision follows the Supreme Court’s November 19 observation urging CAQM to adopt proactive steps to prevent further deterioration of air quality in Delhi-NCR.

Other Restrictions Under GRAP 3

Several restrictions already remain in place under GRAP Stage 3, including:

🚫 Ban on non-essential construction and demolition activities.
🚫 Restrictions on older vehicles, including those below BS-IV emission standards.
🚫 Curtailing movement of high-polluting trucks and commercial vehicles.
🚫 Halt on stone crushers, mining, and industrial activities not using approved fuels.

Advisory for Residents and Educational Institutions

With pollution levels rising, authorities have advised residents to minimize outdoor activities, particularly during the early morning and late evening hours when pollution levels are at their peak.

The Delhi government has also instructed schools and educational institutions to suspend all outdoor sports and physical activities to safeguard children’s health.

AQI Outlook

As per forecasts, air quality in Delhi will likely remain in the ‘very poor to severe’ category for the next six days. Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to current pollution levels may trigger respiratory illnesses, especially among children, the elderly, and those with existing respiratory conditions.
