Laxmipur Feels the Freeze
The effects of the cold are most pronounced in localized areas, notably Laxmipur, where the chill factor is significantly higher. Local residents report the cold intensifying steadily. “The cold has been setting in for the last couple of days,” shared a Laxmipur resident.
Despite the biting cold, some are embracing the weather for outdoor activities. The same resident noted the morning chill: “We have started to feel the chill in the mornings. It feels pleasant to exercise in this weather. I usually leave home around 4:30 am and return by 7:00 am,” highlighting the need for warm clothing and dedicated routines for early risers.

Further complicating the situation, Narayanpatna, a neighboring area typically known for more moderate temperatures compared to Koraput town, is witnessing an unusually colder season this year.
A local resident pointed to an unusual weather pattern preceding the chill as a possible cause for the intensity. “This time it feels different because of the continuous rainfall over the past three to four months,” he explained. The excessive moisture in the air and soil, combined with clear winter skies, often leads to sharper drops in minimum temperatures. Based on current trends, the resident speculated that this intense cold spell could be prolonged, potentially continuing until late February.
Economic Slowdown Amidst the Chill
The sudden environmental shift is also impacting the local economy and social activity. Businesses that rely on foot traffic, especially during the morning and evening hours, are reporting a downturn.
A tea stall owner, whose establishment often serves as a morning social hub, confirmed the drop in sales. “People are not visiting the stall as much because of the colder weather,” he stated, reflecting how the desire to stay indoors in the warmth is overriding regular habits.
As temperatures continue their downward trend across the district, residents in Koraput and adjacent regions are making comprehensive preparations—stocking up on warm essentials and adjusting schedules—in anticipation of what meteorologists and locals alike predict will be a challenging and prolonged cold spell this winter. Authorities are urging the public to take necessary precautions against cold-related illnesses.
