Bhubaneswar: Senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and former Odisha Minister Susanta Singh passed away on Monday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 53 years old.
Singh had been battling a prolonged illness and was receiving medical care for several weeks before his demise. His death has been widely mourned across Odisha’s political spectrum, with leaders remembering his contributions to public service and regional development.
Three-Time MLA from Bhatli
Susanta Singh was a prominent leader of the Biju Janata Dal and represented the Bhatli Assembly constituency in Bargarh district for three consecutive terms. He was elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2009, 2014, and 2019, earning a reputation as an influential political figure in western Odisha.
During his tenure as an MLA, Singh focused on infrastructure development, rural welfare, and public service initiatives in his constituency.
Served as Labour and Rural Development Minister
In the Odisha government, Susanta Singh held key ministerial responsibilities, serving as Minister for Labour and Minister for Rural Development. During his tenure, he was associated with the implementation of several welfare and development programmes aimed at improving rural infrastructure, employment opportunities, and labour welfare across the state.
His administrative experience and grassroots connect made him one of the senior leaders within the BJD.
Defeated in 2024 Assembly Election
Despite his strong political presence, Singh lost the 2024 Odisha Assembly election from the Bhatli constituency. He was defeated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Irasis Acharya, ending his three-term stint as the constituency’s MLA.
Following the electoral defeat, Singh largely stayed away from active public life as he continued treatment for his illness.
