Oil Tanker Reaches Paradip Port After Surviving Gunfire Near Strait of Hormuz

Paradip: An oil tanker carrying nearly 2 million barrels of Iraqi crude oil safely arrived at Paradip Port in Odisha on Wednesday after reportedly surviving a gunfire incident near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest maritime oil routes.

The vessel, MT Sanmar Herald, completed its voyage despite heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, highlighting the challenges faced by commercial shipping navigating through conflict-prone waters.

Tanker Altered Route After Attack

According to reports, the tanker was transporting a cargo of Basra Medium and Basra Heavy crude oil from Iraq to India when it encountered active gunfire near Iranian waters while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Faced with the security threat, the ship’s crew immediately altered the vessel’s route to avoid further danger and safely continued its journey toward the Indian coast.

The timely navigation decision enabled the tanker to complete its voyage without any reported damage to the vessel or injuries to its crew.

Crude Oil Offloading Begins at Paradip

After reaching Odisha, the tanker anchored approximately 22 kilometres off the Paradip coast, where crude oil unloading operations commenced through the port’s Single Point Mooring (SPM) facility.

The offshore SPM system allows large crude carriers to discharge cargo without entering the inner harbour, ensuring efficient and safe transfer of imported crude oil to onshore storage and refinery infrastructure.

Port authorities confirmed that the unloading process was underway following the vessel’s arrival.

Crew Recognised for Safe Voyage

The vessel is believed to have been carrying around 22 crew members, including the Captain, during its passage through the conflict-affected waters.

Acknowledging their professionalism and resilience in navigating the high-risk maritime corridor, officials from Paradip Port Authority boarded the ship after its arrival to felicitate the Captain and crew for successfully completing the challenging voyage.

The recognition came as a gesture of appreciation for the crew’s efforts in ensuring the safe delivery of the vital crude oil cargo despite the difficult circumstances.

No Official Statement from Crew

At the time of reporting, neither the Captain nor any crew members had issued an official statement regarding the reported gunfire incident.

The crew remained engaged in supervising the ongoing cargo discharge operations and did not interact with the media.

Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is regarded as one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with a significant share of global crude oil exports passing through the narrow waterway every day.

Any disruption in the region has the potential to affect international energy supplies and global oil prices. In recent months, commercial vessels transiting the area have faced increased security risks amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The safe arrival of MT Sanmar Herald at Paradip underscores the resilience of international maritime operations while highlighting the importance of maintaining secure shipping lanes for global energy trade.
