In a historic moment for the Indian Armed Forces, President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday hailed the commissioning of the first batch of women officer cadets from the Indian Military Academy (IMA), describing it as a “watershed moment” in the institution’s 94-year history.
Addressing the Passing Out Parade of the 158th Regular Course and 141st Technical Graduate Course at the prestigious IMA in Dehradun, President Murmu said the inclusion of nine women cadets marks a significant milestone not only for the academy but also for India’s defence forces and the country’s vision of women-led development.
Expressing her delight at witnessing the landmark occasion, the President said the commissioning of women officers from the academy reflects the growing role of women in nation-building and military leadership. She voiced confidence that many more women cadets would join the institution in the coming years, further strengthening gender inclusivity in the armed forces.
The Passing Out Parade was held at the iconic Chetwode Building Drill Square in the presence of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and senior military officials.
President Murmu praised the Indian Military Academy for its rich legacy of producing courageous military leaders who have safeguarded the nation’s sovereignty for decades. She described the academy as a symbol of honour, courage, discipline and selfless service, acknowledging the contribution of all those associated with the institution.
Addressing the graduating cadets, the President said they were about to embark on a new chapter of responsibility and service to the nation. She urged them to uphold the values of courage, integrity and wisdom as they begin their careers as commissioned officers in the Indian Army.
A total of 515 Gentleman and Lady Cadets were commissioned during the ceremony, including nine women officer cadets and 34 cadets from 16 friendly foreign countries who will join the armed forces of their respective nations after completing their training.
The Spring Term 2026 Passing Out Parade holds special significance as it marks the first-ever commissioning of women officer cadets trained at the Indian Military Academy since its establishment in 1932. The nine women cadets, who joined the academy in July 2025, successfully completed rigorous military training and marched alongside their male counterparts during the prestigious parade.
The development represents a major step towards greater gender representation and inclusivity in India’s military leadership structure. It also reflects the evolving role of women in the armed forces, with increasing opportunities being opened across various branches of defence services.
Founded on October 1, 1932, the Indian Military Academy has trained more than 65,000 cadets, including military personnel from over 34 friendly countries. The commissioning of the first batch of women officer cadets now adds a new chapter to the academy’s distinguished legacy.
