The Odisha government may soon introduce major measures to regulate the use of petrol and diesel, with indications that restrictions could be imposed on government vehicle usage and greater use of public transport may be encouraged.
Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg on Thursday said the state government is considering several important decisions in view of the prevailing situation.
Govt Considering New Fuel-Saving Measures
Speaking on the issue, Anu Garg said multiple steps are already being implemented to reduce fuel consumption at the official level.
She stated that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has already reduced the size of his official cavalcade by half, while several other officials have also adopted similar measures.
According to the Chief Secretary, instructions may soon be issued for government officers and employees regarding fuel usage and official vehicle operations.
Restrictions on the use of government vehicles are also being considered as part of the proposed austerity measures.
Public Transport Likely To Be Promoted
The Chief Secretary further indicated that the use of public transport may be made mandatory in certain situations to reduce fuel consumption.
“Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has reduced his cavalcade. Several other officials have also taken similar measures. More decisions will be taken today, which will be informed later,” Anu Garg said.
The proposed measures come amid increasing emphasis on fuel conservation, reduced dependence on imported crude oil and promotion of sustainable transportation practices across the country.
